The saga is finally over!
« on: October 06, 2003, 02:42:58 PM »
I received my 209X45 barrel, that shot 9" at 50 yards, back today. Thompson put a note in that said they shot 150 grains of Pyrodex and the 180 grain XTP bullet with 1 3/4" group at 100 yards. They replaced the breach plug  . If I have to shoot 150 grains of Pyrodex to get decent groups, I WILL get a new black powder gun  . I will shot it on Friday and if it don't work, off to the gun shop I go.  I aint married to the encore, I just have a 7MM-08 barrel and the 209X45 and a divorce will only cost a couple hundred dollars "one time" . Don

You know you might want to talk to Cecil at Precision Bullet.  He can probably give you some good advice on that 209X45 as I believe he's worked/tweaked them.  Good Luck and let us know what happens.

I agree with cknight.  I have heard of alot of people complaining about the 209x45 barrels but no one seems to have any problems with the 209x50.  My dad has shot the 50 cal for about a year and a half now and he hasn't had a single problem to date.

This one is a dead issue at this point.  Don and I swapped.  He now has a good A&H that he his hopefully range testing today and I have another Encore to toy with.  So far I've added two washers in the forearm and sanded until the barrel is essentially free-floated.  Started to put the JB to the bore but it was so smooth I decided it was unnecessary.  Also noted his hinge pin wasn't as tight as it could/should be so I put one in from an SS Encore that tightened things up a fair amount.  Trigger is very good as is.

My one outing with the rifle was with a few shots using some 425 grain conicals and some 275 grain PBs.  It shows promise, especially with the conicals which is what I was hoping for.  I hope Don is as happy with his end of the swap as I am with mine.  The A&H is a 1"-2" gun, sometimes better with the right loads.

I think the real generic problem with the 209x45 Encores had little to do with the 1:20 twist rate (this one is 1:28 ) - that should have worked fine for some bullets!  Without elaborating too much, I'll just say that I believe T/C put out a run of very "marginal" 45 barrels.

Tried a "new to me" product when cleaning this Encore.  Butch's Black Powder Bore Shine from MidSouth.  That stuff works VERY well.

I got my new 209x45 barrel in the 1 in 28 twist back from Thompson and it shoots excellent. I am getting 1" groups with the 195gr power belt with 105grs of 777 and also 1" groups with the Thompson shockwave 200gr with 100grs of 777. I am waiting for my shippment of Cecils Deadcenters in 200 gr. I can't wait to give them a try I hear big things about these bullets.......
