scoped mauser

has anyone here scoped their mausers? if so what kind of bases did you find that would work? i cant figure it out i love the weaver bases but the only bases i could find wouldnt fit so i welded them onto my factory sks dustcover mounted a 4x scope and it is a shooter but i would like to get my mauser scoped before season i just cant get used to the battle sight if i have to hold low im bad to forget and miss.

lil_hunter12:  there are about a ton of scope bases for Mauser rifles, and you can find them in different heights if you need to mount the scope high to clear the bolt.  Go to Brownells for a start.  I have scoped a bunch of Mausers and Brownells always had the mounts I needed.  If you want this done before hunting season I would get up on line and into the Brownells catalog and then call them and order the parts you will need.  While you are at it, get some rings too...  HTH.

thanks i had just hoped to use the bases that are used on other rifles but apparently that wont work

There are so many variables- what model of Mauser is it? 98?  Who made it?  Is it drilled and tapped for bases now?  I am assuming that it has a bent bolt?  Most bases and rings won't clear a regular, military bent bolt.......it isn't a sporter rifle since you mention the battle sight.  Chances are that you will have to use a scout mount on the rear sight assembly. 

So, what do you have?  Importer name, manufacturer, model any info to start.

i just ordered leupold base and rings from midway. shipping and all was about 50.00

For 98 large ring mausers I use weaver #46 front base and a # 45 rear base. I use a drilling jig I got from Brownells to drill the receiver.  On a small ring mauser I use  the same front base and a # 55 rear base same drilling jig. Now with that being said when you deal with Mausers there are a lot of variables that can influence scope bases. I have a scope alignment set that I use to insure the rings are in alignment and most of the mausers take some file work to get them to align as they should. A lot of the time you have to remove a lot of the stripper clip guide in order to get the rear base to set correctly. And then depending on how the bolt bend turned out you may get to do some file work on the corner of the base and / or the bolt handle.

thanks for all the advice. i cant figure out the model someone has ground off the original caliber from the reciever and stamped 7.62 on it then the barrel has 308 winchester stamped on it.

This sounds like one of the Israel's And it could be built on any one of number of actions. They measure these by the distance between the stock bolt holes. I don't have the reference in front of me at the moment but there are short, intermediate and long. Then there is the receiver size, large ring and small ring. The large ring the threaded barrel shank is 1.10 inches the small ring is .986 12 tpi 55 degree thread usually though some 60 degree threads are some times encountered. And there are some large ring small barrel shank actions (usually Turkish) out there. Most pre 1898 (91, 92 ,93, 95, 96) actions are small ring cock on close actions. On 1898 and later actions there are both large and small ring actions and they cock on open. With this being said the estimates are that some where over 20 million mauser where built before the end of WWII by numerous arsenals there for the above statements are what is usual found in the surplus Mauser world but by no means are these hard fast rules. You may encounter some really odd versions in the Mauser family depending on who and where they where made.

it has a medium length action it would accomodate a longer cartridge than the .308 it is chambered for. it also cocks when the bolt is closed. but other than that i dont know much about it.

When my gunsmith was alive I watched him drill & tap 1903,1903a3 & mauser receivers on rifles being customized for hunting.On 03a3's he'd change the barrel to a smith corona actually made by high standard, all of his creations were tack drivers.He bedded and tuned a Sako 300wm for a friend of mine who took it to a local range firing at 100 yards from the bench he shot a 3 shot group of .308.

i will have to just leave my rifle open sights i guess. i cant find a gunsmith and it groups to tight to take a chance on messing it up i began to reload and it shoots great wth my reloads.
