New 209X50 barrel ordered
« on: October 07, 2003, 01:33:50 AM »
I should be receiving my new 209X50 barrel in about three days and will start load development for S. OH white tail hunting. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to start? Pet loads? what works well in your Encore? Thanks in advance for any help.

I shoot two Pyrodex Pellets behind a 240 gr Hornady XTP 44 bullet set in a mag express sabot. I get dang near one hole groups with this load. I might also mention that my Encore 209X50 likes a clean barrel so I clean it after every second shot. All I know is it works for me. :D

Thanks a bunch for the help, my only experience with black powder is with goex and .40 patched round ball in a target rifle that I built so this sabot thing is going to be all new to me.

Go with 100 gns of CleanShot.  No cleaning between shots, no bore butter etc... This stuff is fantastic.

The 220 and 240 grain Dead Centers work well, and took two caribou a couple of weeks back pushed by T7 loose.

The 300 grain Dead Center sabot is very good as well, and even the 295 gr. Powerbelt / 348 gr. Powerbelts shot 1" out of the box, with a pair of Pyrodex pellets.

Day at the range

Went to the range yesterday shot some 240 Gr. XTP/Mag express bullets backed up by 100Gr. Pyrodex loose, wet patch after every shot. Got my scope zeroed. Loads pretty easy too, but I am going to get some pellets next trip to the toy store seems that they would be a lot more convenient to hunt with. Ran out of light before I could shoot any really good groups but seems to me that I may need a bigger hinge pin to tighten up the action some. My .223 Rem barrel shoots a little loose to (about inch and a half /100 yd.) got to work on that some I would like to get the Encore to shoot one holers like my mod.700's do. Well once again thanks for all the help with the loads.

Thanks non typical,
That is exactly what I wanted to hear. The kind groups I like to shoot aren't really necessary for hunting but I just like to get the most out of any rifle that I own. Silly I guess but I'm just kind of picky that way.
