Author Topic: Anyone hear how the 30-30's in 2010 proposal ended up? (Read 1701 times)

I had heard and read rumors about Indiana debating on allowing the use of 30-30's for deer firearms season in 2010. It's not legal in 2009, but it may be next year.

Anyone hear anything on this one way or the other?

I had read about it at "indiana gun owners". Its another forum. I have heard talk about it in the gunshops. Basically, it's a bunch of rumors like the pistol cartridge rifles were a couple years ago. They were thinking of making the 30-30 legal to hunt with because of the history of the cartridge.

When you say "History" I start to think of the primitive weapons laws in some Southern states. I wonder if there will be talk of using other "Historical" cartridges like 45-70??

I wish they would allow the 45/70. I've sold both my 30-30 & 45/70 and would love to replace them. As much as I'd like to get a marlin 336C in 30-30, I'd also be torn between that and a H&R Buffalo Classic in 45/70. I've got the reloading supplies for both calibers, but no guns for them. I'd love for the 45/70 be legal for Indiana, but I don't think it'll happen any time soon. I'm not holding my breath for the 30-30 either. I just figure another fun season with the 44mag.

The 30-30 would be great, but I do not think it will happen - BUT I didn't think it would happen for pistol cases in a rifle either. I do not understand how you can have a 243 or a 308 in a pistol, but it is not OK for a rifle

When the "short rifles" were first proposed, I went to the public meetings and discussed the idea with the DNR representatives. They said that only a few people would use a rifle calibered handgun and probably just the people that shot metallic silouette. At first they had to be 35 cal or bigger and now they are down to 243. They felt the target shooters would be more careful and safer than Joe Average hunter. You can hunt squirrels with a 30-06 if you want to also various other species of game and varmits. No caliber restrictions. I say let the hunters use any of the old cartridges that were originally loaded with black powder and let them shoot the old lever actions and single shots that our forefathers used. It would be neat to hunt with a Sharps replica in 45-70.

Schoolmaster, Tell us more about the .243 minimum requirement for hunting deer with a rifle in Indiana. This is the first I have heard of it. It might open up some wildcat possibilities for my encore or contender. Thanks.

Welocome aboard OUR forum!
I'm pretty sure that the .243" minimum requirement applies only to pistols firing rifle cartridges. In rifles, we have specific limitations in reference to the case length and bullet diameter. This does not allow us to use standard rifle cartridges like the 243 Win, 30-06 Spr or .270 Win.

Sorry the way I wrote about the 243 minumim caliber could be mistaken to mean used in rifles. This is not the case. The 243 minimum is for pistols only such as the TC Encore and Savage Striker type of pistols. The pistol caliber rifles must be .357 minimum.

According to the state laws, you're exactly right. Actually I think it will make a great rifle for hunting more than just big squirrels and deer.

Well actually I have the $$, I may need a new place to live after the wife finds out.

I think I timed this purchase perfectly, it's gonna be pretty tough for her to stay mad at me for long, I've been away for a long time.

Let's see, what will keep me the busiest when I return? New baby, wife, work or reloading for my new 35 Whelen, 30-06, 223, 22 Hornet, 500 S&W, or 30-30??

I should be home for 12-18 months before the next deployment.

Momma says the baby and her have priority. I ,not just to keep the peace, would agree. My baby Gwen sure is cute.

I already enjoy being a dad and it's only gonna get better.

Nothing better than having a baby girl. Mine is almost a year now and I can't believe it. She's walking, talking, and getting into stuff.
