need help

I need help I bought a 1911 copy off a friend that thinks he is a gunsmith and so he took it apart and when he put it back together it doesn't function properly.so i got it cheap. when the slide is locked back and you release it the hammer falls. and when you try to cock the hammer back it wont cock so the problem is it wont cock or go in to battery no matter what.i put in a new sear and sear spring and it still wont work. now i am no gunsmith but I can usually get things put back together.can any one help?

It sounds like your friend the gunsmith may have taken too much material off the sear notch on the hammer in a effort to lighten or smooth the trigger pull.  I believe you need a new hammer and I would opt for a Chip McCormick hammer and trigger group (hammer, trigger, sear, sear spring).  You can also just get a standard 1911 style mil-spec hammer from any of the major parts houses like Numrich Arms, Brownells, etc.

I agree................get a new hammer, and that will correct to issue.

Before jumping into parts replacement check a few things.. is the sear spring properly installed. If not it may create such a situation.. If not familiar with the 1911 take it to a smith.. One can install the sear, hammer on the outside of the piece and get at least a idea of how the sear notch + sear relate to each other.. You may indeed need a new hammer(and/or) a new sear but check first..

The left and center legs of the sear spring should be rearward of the sear, disconnector parts. It sounds to me like the left side of the spring is forward and underneath instead of behind where it should be.

Now isn't that just like a charming lady! Those women just seem to know all the right things to say to a guy in distress!!! What's more I'll betcha 6-2-1 even she is spot on with her diagnosis. Three cheers for the women of the world gents.

Yep...she is probably spot on,  had it happen to me once, left sear spring leg was in front and not behind.

This is really cheap to fix, check this first...it only requires taking it apart and putting it back together. 

Don't know if Broom Rider is married, but if so, there is a lucky fella out there.

No for nothing.
but I agree with Broom Rider and the gun was probably re-assembled wrong.
Go get a book that shows the exploded view and step by step instructions to assemble and disassemble the gun.
Took a picture like this to get a S&W 645 my friend had tried to re assemble with out a picture.
When you take it apart.  Assume your friend did it wrong and re assemble based on the instructions rather than what you rememer taking out of the gun.
