PLEASE HELP!! What is wrong with my brakes?
« on: September 22, 2009, 01:36:21 PM »
Hey guys. I have real problems with my brakes and do not know what the problem is. I hope someone here can help me. First off I have a 98 Chevy K1500 with the 4.3 Vortec. Ok here goes. Last week on my way to work when I would come up to a stop sign I would step on the brakes and it did not want to stop. I would get that noise and pusle that you get from your ABS braking system when you are on ice or wet roads. Finally the brakes would kick in and then I would stop very hard. Well I work 70 miles from my house and truck guy and the guy I work with said he would have his truck guy come over to his house and have a look at my truck. My brakes are good all the way around. I just replaced the front pads a couple months ago. Well this guy found that I had a bad wheel cylinder on the rear passanger side. He replaced that wheel cylinder. Well it is still doing it and now I have a light on the dash that lights up and stays on. It says ABS Anti-lock or something along those lines. This is begining to happen more often and I can not seem to make it happen when I want to. It only seems to do it when I am going slow and comming up to a red light or stop sign. Durring hi-way speeds my brakes work fine. So do any of you know what is wrong? Thanks Dale

Sounds like oil on the pads, would be explained by the bad wheel cylinder. You might have to replace the rear shoes. I know you have to get to work, but brakes are not something to ignore. If you get in a wreck after you know there is something wrong with your brakes-YOU ARE SCREWED! It may also be a bad wheel sensor.

If I remember correctly there was a problem with the anti lock sensor on so gm vehicles. Caused some wrecks due to vehicle not braking or releasing the brakes instead of pulsing them. Dont know if that helps but something to check.

have the wheel speed sensors checked for rust they act up more at low speeds when they get dirty. that was a pretty comon problem we saw from trucks that ran in the salt up in the mountains.

My rear shoes have plenty of shoe left. It has something to do with the ABS. Thanks Dale

So I should have my truck guy look at a sensor thing then. Right? Thanks Dale

Where would this sensor be? would there be one on all four wheels? Thanks Dale

should have 1 on each front wheel mounted where the hub is just follow the wire down the control arm to it the back one is normally just ran off the speed sensor on the transfer case.

The sensors compare the speed of the wheels and adjust the brakes to what the computer thinks the speed the wheels should be turning.  The early antilock-systems didn't understand one wheel turning faster than the other three. If you do a brakestand with the early GM  anti-locks, the brakes release, sounds like what is happening with your truck.

If the brake shoes on one wheel has oil on it, the brakes will not be as effective on that wheel, do you see where i am going yet?

I can build you a house from the ground up but I am as dumb as a box of rocks when it come to cars and trucks. Please tell me about how I do a brake stand? I feel like a retard here and I am not sure you can explain it any better but if you could please. Thanks Dale

About the oil leaking he is saying if the shoes are saturated with oil it dont matter how much pad you have they will slip because of the oil. On the sensors just go have a knowledgable mechanic check them out.

A couple of nights ago I was coming home from fishing with my neighbor and he was towing his boat. He happened to mention how happy he was that he had brakes again on his truck. I asked him if he recently put new brakes on his truck and he said no. He said his brakes were good but they just wouldn't stop his truck. He said stopping while towing his boat was like trying to stop a run away train.
He said his buddy told him it was because of his ABS. He said under the hood, on his master cylinder or right next to it was a wired control box for his ABS. He said he unplugged that box and it disabled his ABS. He said his truck has serious stopping power now and he loves it. I said yeah but you don't have ABS anymore and he said people used to drive all the time without ABS. He said the difference in stopping power is night and day now when towing his boat. He said he can actually lock his brakes up now and he likes it that way.
I'm not saying disabling your ABS is the best way to solve your problem but he sure was happy with it.

There was a lot of issues with the ABS on that style truck.

My advice unplug the actuator or pull the fuse ans see if the problem persists.  On the plus side if you can get by just fine without ABS (I can) you've fixed the problem FOREVER

Great idea. Do you know if the fuse would be marked ABS or brakes? I can get along fine without ABS so this sounds like a good fix. Thanks Dale

Well I found the fuse under the hood that was marked ABS. It was a 60 amp fuse. I pulled it and drove it around the block a few times to see if I could get it to do it. Well it has not done it since pulling the fuse. I will know tomorrow for sure though after I take a trip into Pittsburgh. Now if I could only get that damn light on the dash to go out and stay out!!! >:( Dale

OK, we have convinced Dale to de-activate his trucks anti lock brake system, and take a drive thru Pittsburgh tomorrow morning.  I can't wait to read the next post - How do you remove a bumper from your trucks radiator?   :o

If this works there will be no such new thread. :o ;D I really do not like ABS brakes anyways and never saw a need for them. I will let you guys know tomorrow how it turns out. When I get the money I will get them fixed the right way but at least for now I can come up on a stop sign and stop just when I want to. Dale

I hope this doesn't sound harsh as my only concern is for your safety and others like your family........................
I really don't know what to think anymore..Weren't you just considering spending money on a super charger/turbo/gears for that truck?   I just don't think brakes are something to skimp on or that can wait. You are risking everyone's lives on the road, not just yours. Yeah, I drove many vehicles without ABS, but that was in vehicles that weren't designed for it.  You can't know for certain that the brakes are 100% reliable with the ABS disconnected.  These newer vehicles don't take kindly to things being removed as far as electronics are concerned. Not only that but if you had an accident and this came to light...You would be paying a judgement for a long time.  No insurance company would help you.  Why risk it?  Glad you live in Pennsylvania.  This idea is just plain dumb..Get the thing fixed and spend what it takes to fix them.  Borrow the money if you have to.  I'd rather walk than drive a truck without good brakes.

30/30 is right,if you disable the abs you are liable if there is an accident, also your insurance company will not pay,and will cancel
you,and the other party can sue you.

Copied from Wikipedia, jury Dale stands before today.

[edit] Criminally negligent manslaughter
Criminally negligent manslaughter is variously referred to as criminally negligent homicide in the United States, gross negligence manslaughter in England and Wales or culpable homicide in Scotland.

It occurs where death results from serious negligence, or, in some jurisdictions, serious recklessness. A high degree of negligence is required to warrant criminal liability. A related concept is that of willful blindness, which is where a defendant intentionally puts himself in a position where he will be unaware of facts which would render him liable.

Criminally negligent manslaughter occurs where there is an omission to act when there is a duty to do so, or a failure to perform a duty owed, which leads to a death. The existence of the duty is essential because the law does not impose criminal liability for a failure to act unless a specific duty is owed to the victim. It is most common in the case of professionals who are grossly negligent in the course of their employment. An example is where a doctor fails to notice a patient's oxygen supply has disconnected and the patient dies (R v Adomako).
[edit] American Law

In jurisdictions such as Pennsylvania, if a person is so reckless as to "manifest extreme indifference to human life", the defendant may be guilty of aggravated assault as well as of involuntary manslaughter.[17]

In many jurisdictions such as California, malice may be found if gross negligence amounts to willful or depraved indifference to human life. In such a case, the wrongdoer may be guilty of second degree murder.

Well my brakes sure worked better today than they have the past few days. When I come to a red light or stop sign and put on the brakes I actualy come to a stop like I should. You guys can say what you want but my truck is safer now than it was yesterday. When I get the money I will have it fixed right but this will have to do for now. Dale

Good for you!

The naysayers in this thread who don't know a caliper from a proportioning valve fail to understand that when the ABS system senses a fault that it's supposed to revert back to fail safe NON ABS operation. Which is odiously what your truck wasn't doing.

ALL ABS systems are designed to operate as a background system and not interfere with the "normal" operation of hydraulic brakes.  Anything else WOULD be dangerous as hell and would be akin to a car losing all steering control because the PS pump went out

I'm not going to participate in sharp comments anymore; it doesn't do anyone any good.  I felt like you needed to hear it even if you didn't like it.  I would have taken it the same way I guess.

I know how ABS works. I also know how insurance companies are when having to pay a large claim.  You can take all the risks you want.  Brakes are not something to skimp on because of others on the road.  You have a responsibility to others safety whether you know it or not.  My opinion may stink, but I could never let this go unwarned.

It was about twenty years ago when I was traveling in a seedy area of my town.  Highway 1 went through our town before the bypass was built.  I was doing about 30mph towing a trailer as the speed limit was 35. I was driving a 78 Dodge truck with drum brakes.  There was a bar on one side of the street and a fellow decided to dart out in front of me to get to his car.  I hit him and he flew over my hood onto my windsheild.   The only damage was a dented up hood.  We both were lucky.  He was very drunk and I guess that saved him.  He was not hurt other than a few bruises.  I waited until a cop showed up, that was before cell phones and we waited for a couple of hours.  Finally the guy gave up and left.  I knew he was Ok, but I insisted he ride home with friends. I did get the officer to fill out a report and never heard another word about it. I thank God it wasn't a kid.  I know people run over kids everyday with ABS equipt vehicles. I always think if it were to happen today, I would have been able to stop in time as my vehicles come with better brakes including ABS.

And if Dale hits that same drunk tomorrow, and an investigation is done and they find a piece of tape over the idiot light and the ABS fuse missing, who would win that one? If you do disable it, at least don't do it so obviously.

 Dale,
when you have a chance. Got to auto zone or orielly's or other parts house and have them scan your truck for codes(put the fuse in when you get there) Most places now days do it for free. They should be able to tell you what is malfunctioning. Good luck stay safe. For the record I HATE ABS!

Sure did take a lot of flak over this one didn't you Dale. I would like to know if anyone has ever heard of a cop or insurance company checking to see if the ABS fuse was there?
