270 Win

Has anyone done any work with the 270 Win equipped with a 20" barrel? I traded for a really neat Mauser with a beautiful Manlicher Stock,so I am going to have to work up some loads for it.Thinking faster powders than H4831 would be better.
 Your opinions will be appreciated

IMR 4350 should be fine. Varget may also be good.

I have a Ruger M77 MKII in 270 Winchester and it has a 22 inch barrel.  My load gives me approx 2850 FPS with IMR-4381 and 150 grain bullets which gives me sub MOA accuracy.

The 270 Winchester shines with slow burning powders and your short barrel will do its best with the same powders.  Just don’t get hung up over velocity and shoot for accuracy.

I wouldn’t go past IMR-4350 or H4350 for burn rate, but IMR-4381, H4381 and IMR-7828 will be the best offering.

It has been proven for decades that the powders that give the highest velocities in long barrels do the same in short tubes.  The classic .270 powder is H4831, but newer products like RL19 and RL22, IMR7828 and WMR can give good results.  Accuracy will depend on what your barrel likes, as always.  Actually 20" isn't all that short, try a 15" Encore sometime!

Hmmmm well I have had a 20" barreled BSA CF2 Stutzen (full stocked) rifle for quite some time, 20+ years, in fact it was the first full bore rifle I brought. I found that using slower powders like Reloader 19 gave a huge muzzle flash and Win 760 a fire ball. So I experimented and found that H380 with 130 grain bullets worked wonderfully  using 130 Grain Nosler Ballistic Tips I won the clubs annual 600 yard shoot three times until they changed to rules to ban scopes  The other year I used that load in another 22" barreled BSA, a Majestic this time and it took down a Nice Muntjac Buck.

I had a nicely done full stocked Mauser in 270 for many years.  It was throated way longer than the magazine could cover but it shot well enough. I took antelope, Mule and Whitetail deer along with 4 elk using 57.0 grains of H4831 and the 150 grain Speer Hotcor. I loaned it to a friend who got thrown in jail, his sister pawned the rifle to get him out and an employee of the pawn shop added it to the collection of guns he stole from the pawn shop. He is still in prison but my rifle is long gone.

55 grains of IMR 4350 with a 130 grain Nosler Solid Base  gave a friend 2.950 fps in a 20" barrel.

I have been using 45.5 gr of H4895 with my 15 inch Encore pistol with 130 gr SST bullets and 2645 fps and 1 in groups at 100 yds. Have had great results on hogs, bear and deer out to 300 yards. Hope this helps.

I'd check the twist rate of the barrel.  Some of the early Mausers had fairly slow twist barrels and may not stabilize heavy for caliber bullets.  Fortunately, there are an awful lot of bullet choices for .277 so even if it does have a slow twist barrel you will do fine.
