Type of BP for Signal Cannon
« on: September 23, 2009, 02:33:37 AM »
Brooks-USA made the brass SuperX cannon and advises to use Goex FFG BP. They also advise against using smokeless powder. There is a Gander Mountain store in my area, about 60 miles from where I live nad they sell guns and muzzleloaders and also accessories like BP. Looking at their products via web, I notice they do not carry Goex but have three other brands of FFG BP - can I use any brand so long as it is FFG and not smokeless?

I just went to Gander Mountain's web site and looked around.

One item they sell is callled "Jim Shockey's Gold FFG Powder by American Pioneer™", which sort of implies Black Powder, but in the Q&A for this product someone asked if it was really black powder.

The response from Gander Mountain was
A:This is not real black powder. This is a substitute.

So purchase from them with care, and make sure you are getting what you think you are getting.

Rick

Another one the are selling :

American Pioneer™ Powder For Black Powder Guns ... says "American Pioneer™ Powder is a loose, granular powder designed and created to be a sulfurless black powder replacement."

The third,

Hodgdon® Triple Se7en FFG Granular Powder "Does not contain sulfur", which means it can not possibly be black powder as well.

Thanks Rickk - I had suspected the same and decided to save myself the drive. Thanks for confirming it. There are several small family run gun shops within 10 miles of me - I called one today - they did not have BP. Emailed another one from their website - no reply yet. Called 3rd one and no answer. If worst comes to worst I will order from the sponsor list at sticky. Thanks again. Much appreciate your extra efforts to help me out.

Skip,

Take a look at the schedule for N-SSA and cannon shooting at Fort Shenadoah.  Make the trip over to watch the mortar and cannon shoots and and as you drive out the back gatge stop at Backcreek gunshop and buy powder.  You will have to call ahead and make arrangements first how ever.

Thanks for suggestion DD - actually they are probably who I would order from online. It's doubtful that I can get to the shoot this time because of other committments that eat my schedule this time of year all the way to end of December. Maybe I can make it sometime, though. Thanks again.
