IMR 4064 and AA 4064
« on: September 23, 2009, 02:39:12 PM »
Last week I bought some AA 4064 by mistake.  It was right by the 5744 and the colors are almost the same and instead of picking up the 5744, I got home and saw I had 4064.

It may not be a big deal because I have used IMR 4064 for years in several of my bottle neck cases but I am having a hard time finding out just exactly what AA 4064 is.  I can find some spotty load data but what I am wondering is, if it is the same as IMR 4064 or not.  I haven't opened it up because I still have a few LBs of IMR in my cupboard and I will use it all first cause it is the oldest.

If you know what it is, I would sure appreciate a reply.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

I've used the IMR stuff quite a bit and like the results! Not knowing what calibers you will use it in, a general warning to use PROPER data when handloading is in order. AA 4064 is a rifle powder suitable for many calibers. I included the AA data site for your use!

If ya know the shop owner , they may let you exchange it for the correct powder.  Maybe the owner will seperate the 2 look alikes so it won't happen again.

Accurate makes some good powders.  I have a couple 8-pound jugs of other Accurate numbers in my powder box.

I have been a consumer of IMR4064 for close to fifty years.  I like it, but when I buy it I buy two or more cans of the same lot number and do some load testing.  I operate under the theory that the new lot of IMR4064 is very “similar” to the three can lot I bought back in the 1990’s.  But they have a different lot number which tells me they are similar.

from accurate:

"XMR-4064TM Very similar to IMR 4064. This single base rifle propellant is short cut for better metering
while delivering the performance shooters have come to expect from 4064. This propellant meets the
needs of service rifle competitors and hunters who prefer extruded powders. Admirers of the 30–06 will especially like this propellant."

Given the choice I will go with IMR-4064 because of time invested in load development.  At one time Accurate was lower price, but no more.
