I am thinking maybe a 280 but I would like to have another 204 or maybe a 357. I just can't make up my mind on this. Dale

You have a wide variety there Dale. If you want to just shoot and do a deer once in a while the 357 to Max would be a great choice. For strictly deer, the 280 is hard to beat. For 'chucks you know about the 204. For me the 357 would do most of my woodchuck hunting, but you seem to get loong shots at them. Most of my shots are under 100 yards, you have to stalk them. Good Luck and Good shooting.

COOL DALE!  I 've been this route myself before.  It's hard to stay away.  Where did you find your frame?  I've been shooting the 357mag lately what fun!....went and reamed it to max and probably going to range today to try her out.   I know you like groundhog shooting....so for that I say 204.  They are great and mine was very accurate with factory hornady ammo.

I got last year's first chuck with my Handi .45-70 at about 80 yards.  I'm eager to try my .357 Max on them.  I have a buttstock cartridge holder on it and I keep 3 rounds each Max, Mag and .38 in it.  It gives me a lot of versatility.  I haven't learned the Max's drop at various ranges well as yet, but when I do, I see no reason not to be able to nail a chuck over 200 yards.  This year's first chuck fell to a Max 180 gr. SJHP, but it was only a 30 yard shot and the Max was the load in the rifle at the time.  It kinda destroyed the critter.

I agree with LaOtto on the .357.  It gives you 3 rifles in one.

Dale, I agree with the 357, either reamed or not it is a heck of a caliber.     Doug

Dale, good to have you back with us!!! Remember the .280 is a real 7mm and if you reload there are many, many fine bullets you could use to shoot. It would be great for anything for ground hogs to bear and moose, as well as everything in between. The 7 mm caliber has proven itself many time over, and we all know the stories of many the elephants taken with the 7x57, the less powerful parent of the .280. Loaded with the right bullets, and those bullets put in the right place, the 7x57 is a deadly combination. Loaded down for ground hogs it would hardly recoil at all. All the best to you....<><....:)

P.S. and a GREAT deer gun, capable of accurate kills a long ranges....

Actually...it is 4 in 1, as a 360 Dan Wesson can be chambered too. Why anyone would not go to the Max, I don't know. All the reports have been of very good accuracy, even with the free bore on the non-Max rounds.

The 38 Special max case length is 1.155.
The 357 Mag max case length is 1.290.
The 360 Dan Wesson max case length is 1.41.
The 357 Maximum max case length is 1.605.

Does anyone know if you use pointy bullets and seat them long, if that helps the free bore issue?

This free bore does not appear to impact accuracy. FWIW

A pointed 300gr bullet might do it!!

It's hard to stay away, I know that route as well :o ;D We knew you would be back, but no shame. I love me a good Remington as well as I know you do.
As for cals...take you pick, eventually you will at one point in time end up with most of them anyway 8)

Actually a heavy blunt bullet will reach the lands easier than a pointy bullet. The bearing surface on a blunt design is longer than a pointy bullet. I do not worry about it. A 38 special case with a wad cutter is along ways away from the lands and they shoot surprisingly well.  ;)

I think a 357 would be a lot of fun. I don't reload yet so doing the max would be down the road. It might be neat to chop the barrel down to 17" or so. That might be counter productive though. You would lose probably a couple hundred feet per second doing so. It would be a neat handi little gun though. I have to say the the 357 is on top of my list. The other one I am thinking of is a 308 bull barrel. It is tough to choose. Dale
