shoot through screens

       Well here’s the story,   
  Bought my first ground blind this year. The box said it has shoot through screens. Archery season opened in pa this weekend ,about 6:30 pm a big doe walks 20 yards a little quartering away with her leg forward. Can you say pump station disconnect! Well let me tell you this, never, I repeat never shoot mechanical broad heads through a screen, the arrow took off like a stinger missile after a 747! Just trying to save ya’ll the trouble

Yup the blind makers say it's OK but about every report I've read so far from folks who tried it with bows say it really doesn't work that way. I did read one from a rag writer who tried a bunch of different hunting tools thru it and reported that at least one rifle he used shot better thru the screen. Go figure.

mesh window screen cost me the biggest buck i have ever had the opportunity to kill. it was raining and the screen glazed over with water and i could see through it with my eyes but not through the scope and after i cleaned the lenses on the scope 3 times i realized it wasnt the scope the buck walked of with me cussing like a sailor threw the srceens in the trash that evening

It might have helped remembering that expendables open on impact. LOL
At least it wasnt a giant buck.

bart74, If he was close why didnt you just shoot it looking down the side of the barrel? If he was farther you could have flicked off the water clearing up your view, moved the mesh out of your way, cut a hole or opened up the window.
Another thing is when you first get set up or at first light, check your equipment & play out a scenario of exactly what you would do to harvest an animal in your situation like looking through your scope.

Will standard broadheads shoot through OK? I use a crossbow with standard 3 blade muzzys. Didn't get to try last season, I guess I should shoot a target a few times through one. I kind of like to keep them on because you cannot see into the blind when they are on, plus I think they may help control odor and keep the blind a bit warmer.

Theres only one way to find out.
I noticed at bass pro the other day that there are screen & mesh replacement windows for different blinds.
I would trust the screen over mesh. the mesh was like the back half of a trucker hat & the screen was way thinner & kinda stretchy. I didnt happen to look at the brands of these products though, sorry.

A friend shot thru. one with a rifle , ended up with a 6-8 inch hole . muzzle was almost touching at the shot. guess they melt a bit .

I've shot through the screens with a recurve and a compund,both with magnus 125 grain heads....the recurve shots would almost stand upright as they passed thrugh the mesh,then straighten out (could have been the tuning,or the speed,dunno)...the compound sends them through without a hiccup,I can't even tell when it goes through.

Shooting through mesh goes against everything I have been taught.I dont shoot through any thing be it leaves brush or mesh.

I've killed a nice tom and a doe shooting fixed blade 2 blade broadheads through the shoot through screens.  I keep the screens pinned in and fairly tight.  I don't see a problem with my set up.  I have practiced a bit with some of the screen material before actually using it in a hunting situation.  I'll most likely shoot through the screen again when the opportunity exists.
