quick question
How do you fasten the aluminum to the steel frame? I built a snowmobile trailer from aluminum and welded stainless to the mild steel everywhere the aluminum would touch. I still has corrosion issues. Maybe I just over estimated the life of the trailer
HT,
I welded in "tabs" made of angle iron to the steel frame. I will drill it and bolt the alum to the tabs. I'll likely also use something like foam tape to separate the alum from the steel.
30-30Man,
Yea, I will be definitely, adding fenders. made of diamond plate attached to the frame. She is not done, kinda a work in progress. I had allot of work with the spring geometry. Moving the spring mounts THREE TIMES!!! I first set the shackle angle at 45 degress. The snapped closed with only my weight in the bed. I moved them to vertical. I could then bounce the trailer, but if I sat on one side that side spring would snap closed against the frame. SO, I set the springs at 315 degrees. Now my worry was they would snap closed inside the mount, but they do not and will not. With the addition of about 300lbs the shackle angle is about 340 degrees or almost straight. So with a 2000lb cap it should be OK. I had about 1000lbs in it bouncing to bring the tires off the ground. No problems, shackle angles approached 45 degrees.
Tim,
Thanks for the tip on the TREG coupling. I have seen them, nice stuff!!
Mauser,
I was going SOA but with 33" tires it was too tall for the wife's Libby and pops WJ that will also be towing this. It was almost perfect for my TJ and MJ's though.
.
Guys, if your interested, keep checking back to the build. I work on it all the time. So you can watch the progress.
