Anyone have or build an offroad trailer?
« on: September 24, 2009, 02:25:57 PM »
I'm building one now... Its got Jeep XJ leafs, Jeep wheels. (These are 225's it will get 33x950's just like my MJ has.) It will get alum diamond plate sides and plywood decking. Truth be told, it will get most use as a on the road trailer for yard work/supplies and camping.

There are many great threads online that mirror my build!! Must be something in the mountain streams where we all wheel!!!  LOL

Hope you enjoy it!!

BTW, this is my MJ build thread...  http://comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1230

quick question
How do you fasten the aluminum to the steel frame? I built a snowmobile trailer from aluminum and welded stainless to the mild steel everywhere the aluminum would touch. I still has corrosion issues. Maybe I just over estimated the life of the trailer

I've got a few homemade trailers and the biggest problem I have is building them heavy enough so that they don't bounce all over the place when empty but light enough to tow easily.  The shocks you installed will help on that I guess.  Most people just install the springs and leave the shocks out...I guess that is why my light 8ft traler bounces so much.  The only thing I would add is some deep well fenders.  Mud is going to fling all over your gear without fenders.  Also close the backs that face the box of the trailer.  I have one that is not completely boxed and things can slide into the tire and may cause problems.  I lost a good metal detector on an offroad trailer that way.

CW, here's an internet friend's website with the rig he uses that may give you some ideas, the Treg off-road coupling he uses looks like it's pretty useful.  ;)

Don't forget to flip the axle saddle to the top of the axle to get a few extra inches in height taller. This helps in the cool factor and it's free!!!!!!! ;D

 HT,
I welded in "tabs" made of angle iron to the steel frame. I will drill it and bolt the alum to the tabs. I'll likely also use something like foam tape to separate the alum from the steel.

30-30Man,
Yea, I will be definitely, adding fenders. made of diamond plate attached to the frame. She is not done, kinda a work in progress. I had allot of work with the spring geometry. Moving the spring mounts THREE TIMES!!! I first set the shackle angle at 45 degress. The snapped closed with only my weight in the bed. I moved them to vertical. I could then bounce the trailer, but if I sat on one side that side spring would snap closed against the frame. SO, I set the springs at 315 degrees. Now my worry was they would snap closed inside the mount, but they do not and will not. With the addition of about 300lbs the shackle angle is about 340 degrees or almost straight. So with a 2000lb cap it should be OK. I had about 1000lbs in it bouncing to bring the tires off the ground. No problems, shackle angles approached 45 degrees.

Tim,
Thanks for the tip on the TREG coupling. I have seen them, nice stuff!!

Mauser,
I was going SOA but with 33" tires it was too tall for the wife's Libby and pops WJ that will also be towing this. It was almost perfect for my TJ and MJ's though. ::) ;) ;D.

Guys, if your interested, keep checking back to the build. I work on it all the time. So you can watch the progress.

I'm making one using Samurai Springs and wheels to tow behind my Sammi.   I'm using duel axles not for more weight capacity, but for flotation in mud.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Got and pics? I would LOVE to watch the build!!!

Mine is all painted now, waiting to wire the lights and mount the fenders so I can run it thru inspection. Then I'll get the sides on. We got a temp plate the other day and only have 20days to get it to inspection. SO anticipation meanial problems I want to be sure we have plenty of time to make it right. Sunday we should have it ready for inspection.
