Tamer 20 question
« on: September 25, 2009, 10:01:53 AM »
Love the gun... not so crazy about the stock.  With shell tension screws tightened all the way down, I'm still losing shells on every shot.  Is there a fix for this?  Also, I'm considering replacement with a conventional stock (keeping original forend).  Is this a good choice?  Thanks.

It is what I and a few others here have done and it works great. It's the gun in my avatar
PROUD REDNECK CONSERVATIVE

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

Thanks for the info guys.  This was my first H & R purchase, but after spending some time here I'm sure it won't be my last.    ;D

That lil gun kicks like a mule doesn't it?   As soon as mine comes back from Remington I am going to try to fix the shellholders.  I will figure them out.  I really like the idea of having 3 shells ready to go at all times.

I'm thinking of buying a survivor stock to try if I ever find a good deal on one.  I would loose the shellholder but maybe it wouldn't kick so dang hard.

chipmunk... The 2 3/4" #6 are pretty reasonable,  but the sabots are a different story.   :o.

mike@nds... Nice photo, that's what I'm after.

OK... I changed out the Tamer stock for a conventional one from Choate.  I ended up having to use a 4 1/2" bolt instead of the 5" one that came with the Tamer.  After putting it all together, I found that the hammer would not stay in the cocked position.  I figured even though I used a shorter bolt, it still must be interfering with the hammer mechanism.  I added one washer... still had the problem.  Two washers cured it.  My question is... A washer is not very thick.  If the difference between one and two washers fixes the problem, is there a danger of it being so close that the hammer lock-back is unreliable?  Also, I had to use two lock washers with the one original flat washer because that's all that was available.  Are lock washers OK?  By the way... the conventional stock MAKES the gun!  Thanks in advance for any responses to my concerns.

Finally able to handle the Tamer(both 410 & 20) in the local Gander MT.  No offense to anybody but I'll stick with my 20ga Topper thank you very much.  I liked the looks of the Tamer, have read most of the posts here, looked and looked at on the HR website, thought I would really like it.  One nice thing about the H&R/NEF product line is lots of variations for lots of folks. Maybe the stock change would work for me or I'll have to  check out a youth model and see if I'll like one of those....

I do enjoy the tamer with replacement stock, the original was a nose buster, although my son does like shooting it with the tamer stock.

dang good gun for bunnies and grouse, short barrel and nice spread, although doves where a different story, as coveys were busting a little farther out or so it seemed......
