Loading lead bullets a few ???
« on: September 26, 2009, 10:02:02 AM »
Gonna start loading lead bullets for my 45/70. Any secrets I need to know about. Im gonna start with some 405s. Right around 1500 fps. Ive been reloading for just a couple years & Ive had descent success with just neck sizing & no crimping. Its for a single shot NEF, So is crimping nessacary for lead bullets. Oh yeah, will the gas checks prevent the brass from shaving the lead. I was gonna give varget a try, but Gander MTN didnt have any so I picked up another lb of reloader 7.  Ill be using magnum large rifle primers, cause I still cant find any primers anywhere. These are gonna be for deer within 100 yards. I be loading for an NEF  22 inch barrel with peep sight. Let me know of any tips or tricks I need to know. Thanks guys
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

For the 405's I like to put just a slight crimp on them , nothing hard , just a bump , it seems to help with my groups ann also lets the round slid into the chamber without hanging up on the case mouth .

As for the gas check you'll still have to bell the case mouth some , unless you have the GC's I'd not worry about them , I run my cast from ww's up to around 1800 fps with just a bare base and have no leading problems .

If the bullet is a GC design ya really need a GC on it. If it is not ya can't put one on easily anyway. Are they needed? Depends on velocity and alloy hardness.
