If you are talking white rice.
there are three ways I make it.
1) Boil And it takes no more fuel than the instand.
Bring the water to a rolling boil and either toss in rice 1 cup and a bullion cube or a pinch of salt and I retun the rice to a boil stir if there is a cube in it and then turn off the burner and let it cook for 18 min in a good heavy covered pot.
2) is baking rice. and if you are already using the oven or smoker it is a no brainer.
Heat some oil and toss in rice and stir, I usually also add onions, red peppers, and some garlic along with salt.
Stir to coat the rice with the oil and add 2C of chicken stock or water.  Fit with lid and toss in smoker for 20 min.
remove and add peas or other green veg and stirr.  I use frozen veg but canned can be used.  If you do not want the smoke flavor a dough can be made and seal the lid of the dutch oven.  Salt Flour and water will do.
3) is making stickey rice for asian food.
Similar to #1 only add a capfull of Rice Vinigar and only water.
If you are talking about Brown rice, or Wild rice then that does take 45-60 minutes of fuel to cook.  But again you can bake it in the smoker in a sealed dutch oven when you are making BBQ. or using a stove/ oven for heating the house.
If you seal the lid with dough use a little less H2O when cookig.
Also the 2C H20 to 1 C white rice ratio works when making 1 C of rice.  The more you make the less water you will need.

mcwoodduck, I basically cook my rice almost the same as you do. I bring either 2 or 4 cups of water to a rolling boil depending on how much rice I cook. As it is getting up to boil, I add a little margarine to the water and salt. Once the water starts to boil, I pour in 1 cup or 2 cups of rice. Always cook rice 2 parts water to one part rice. I stir the rice in, place a tight fitting lid on the pot, cut the stove eye down on lowest setting and cook for exactly 20 minutes on low heat. The trick to good rice is never take the lid off the pan until the 20 minutes cooking time. Mine comes out perfect every time. Rice is a food that will stick to your ribs longer than most any other food, thus it makes for a good food if you plan on going a good long while without anything to eat. It does needs some sort of other food substitute to sub stain you as it along does not have enough nutrients to keep you healthy just eating it without any other food. I once ate it everyday to lose some weight, but I also had peanut butter on crackers and multi-vitamins as my substitute food to give me the nutrients that I needed.

Almtnman,
Next time you are at the store.
Grab a box of the Knorr Chicken bullion cubes and toss one in with the rice instead of the butter or spread.
You will be really pleased.
I get three types of rice.
The big sack of Bismatti from cost co,
Short grain sushi rice from Wholefoods
Jasmine rice from Whole foods
and Wild rice.
Some times I will make the wild rice and then add the bismatti in the last 20 min.
I also do not rinse my rice before cooking like thye say to.  But really like the smell of the bismatti.

I also buy the big burlap bags of Bismatti rice at Sam's Warehouse as I have developed a taste for it and like the smell of it cooking. I will get some of the Knorr bullion cubes and give that a try.  ;)

One thing about butter beans. The biggest i ever saw was the old army c rations. Butter beans and ham. Most hated them but I thought they were good.
