Optics for slug gun
« on: September 27, 2009, 08:37:10 AM »
Reached 40yrs young and my eyes need alitttle help. I'm going to put an optic on my slug gun and I'm in a pinch for funds. Any suggestions on lower price scopes (ie Bushnell Banner/Trophy, Maine View Optic, Cabelas...) and or red dot. I've seen good deals on the Bushnell Trophy red dot but didn't know if it would hold up with slugs. I really don't need anything more than 2.5 or 3x power, I hunt the North East and it's thick up here, a few shots in the 100 yard area but mostly up close.

I have a Bushnell Banner 3X9X40 long eye relief scope on an H&R Ultra 12 ga slug gun.  Its been on for a few years.  I've had no problems with it or any other Banners I have.  It is mounted with Leupold Rifleman rings and a Weaver base.

 :)

Of the brands you mentioned I would go with some type of Bushnell Trophy
Crosman Slingshot, Daisy Red Ryder, dull butter knife

I've got a Simmons shotgun Prosport model 1.5-5x32 matte finish, Truplex reticle sitting in the original box . It's got a slight dent from a faulty ring that doesn't interfere with any function of the scope.  Sell it to you for $55 shipped. PM if interested.

Buy some cheap eye glasses and a good scope.  You've got your priorities all wrong.  Don't handicap your opportunities to be a successful hunter.

Noreaster,

Natchez shooter has a weaver 4x32 classic shotgun scope on sale for around $80.  Retails around $240.  I have one, low profile works great on a Handi rifle/shotgun, fully multi coated lens.  In my opinion it is one of the best scope buys out there for a quality optic.

243 thanks for the offer, but I have some Cabelas club points I'm going to use for the purchase. Guys thanks for the info. I'm leaning toward the banner or trophy. Still waiting for my rail mount from NEF/H&R to come in the mail.

I hunt the NE as well and I use Leupold 1-4x VX-IIs on my slug guns. I like the wide field of view for the thick woods and ability to increase the power if needed. I also have a Bushnell 1.5-4x on a muzzleloader that is not quite a VX-II, but honestly, not that far off either.

Get the Bushnell Banner. I have a 1.5-4.5 x 32 with a regular duplex on a win. trapper in 45 colt and love it.  Its a shotgun scope so it has long eye relief, something you'll want on a slug gun. This is a scope that you can leave both eyes open while shooting. My little trapper kicks hard with the loads I put thru it but still not like a slug gun can produce. I'm sure it will hold up though. In my opinion the banners(I have a 3-9x40 also) are the best scopes you can buy around $70.   Dave

I'll second the VXII 1-4.  AT 2 power you can see the barrel and my rifle seems to swing as naturally as a shotgun.  Great for running shots.  Mine is on an old Rem 742.  Practice with both eyes open.

I have 2  Banners a 4 to 12 and a 1.5 to 4 something, in one word they are great.

THey have good lenses and gather light very well.
