Blanks for firing
« on: September 27, 2009, 12:20:36 PM »
When you have a slap-hammer .22 ignition system on your cannon; what are the best kind of .22 blanks to use?

Hi Ex 49' er,  For convenience, I use driver blanks from Lowe's or Home Depot.  Winchester .22 short [blackpowder] blanks work well too.  Also, look for several large packages to arrive sometime in October.   ;D

If blanks aren't available, any 22 rimfire shell should do the job if you pull the bullet and prime the vent.

RWS CB caps, Aguila Colibri and other low-powered 22's use only a heavy primer charge (no loose powder), so they would probably work fine without priming the vent if you happen to have some handy.

Thankyou Dom, Rocklock1, and Victor3 for answering my question. I got some of the Ace Hardware blanks with the yellow tip and a few of the green tipped ones as well last weekend at a second hand store and was curious what ya'll used.  The contents of the boxes from Dom will be a GB Parrot and a half with sights, and slap-hammer.

Boomlover, It is a combination Birthday, Christmas, New Years, Easter, Colombus Day, Election Day, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Early Retirement gift to myself. I like the idea of yanking the lanyard. I've used lots of slow green fuse over the years and have a bunch of super fast artillery fuse I got from Cannonfuse.com.

Good job, and don't forget the pics, later! I picked up a box of the brown tip .22 blanks, got a source here in town with brown, green, yellow, who knows, maybe red, purple, ect! I am cogitating hard on converting my 2.25" bore to a slap hammer/.22 firing system, I like the instant firing, too, instead of waiting for the sloooowwww green fuse to burn down. We used it at the Labor Day Lone Pine Shoot, first day, anyway, went to friction for that instant result! BTW, a "Parrott and a half"? Is that a half scale? Or a GB Parrott, and a Half Scale Parrott, too? BoomLover

I use the slap hammer on my Dom swivel but i chose to use 209 primers as ignition. Works great.

Yep, one and a half Parrots. I'll explain after I get it. If I can figure out how to post pictures, I might do a show and tell. Otherwise I'll spill the beans after it arrives. Polly want a cracker and a half?   ;D

Guzzibill, thats what they are talking about buying from Ace, Home Depot and Lowes.

THe problem with .25 is the vent hole has to be larger and that reduces chamber pressure and increases pressure release via the vent.

When firing with the blanks is there any problem getting the fired blanks out of the barrel or does the powder charge kick 'em out? Just curious.

Ex 49"er,  The current vent hole size is .225".   A .22 blank is .220".  You are the second person that mentioned having to pull the blanks for the vent hole by hand.  If this is a problem, you can take a .234" drill bit and open the vent hole up a bit.  This larger hole will fix cause the .22 blanks to eject.   A few people like the idea of having to manually extract the blank from the vent after firing the cannon.  Dom

My lock will allow the standard .22 blank to eject straight up by itself with some force even without firing a charge. The hammer head is formed like the end of a slot screwdriver and strikes both sides of the cartridge head. The thin hammer head offers little resistance to the vent gases like a standard hammer head would so the hammer can't be blown back by the gases..

Very clever Max, even J.A. Dahlgren might admire your elegantly simple solution to the problem of the hammer being slapped up by the blowback coming from the vent.
Do you think this lock would work on a Civil War naval type primer?
