What difference would I notice between Redhawk and Super Redhawk
« on: September 27, 2009, 06:52:14 PM »
My friend is manager of a pawn shop.  He has a pristine blue .44mag Redhawk for an incredible price.  My question is, if the Super Redhawk is better, what would I notice from a shooter-only perspective?

Is there a step-by-step, with pictures, how-to do a trigger job on a Redhawk??

We are shooting large "Russian" boars with a Marlin .44mag lever-action but, shootin' 'em with the Ruger sounds even better.  Should I wait until he gets a Super Redhawk?

First there is a substantial weight difference with a heavier barrel being on the Super. If I was to choose, I'd go with the Super due to already owning one and knowing how they shoot. I never really cared for the Redhawk feel and to this day, never owned one.

If barrel length makes a difference to you please note that the Super Redhawk(the best dang revolver ever manufactured) only comes in 7-1/2" and 9-1/2" barrels.

I think the one in the pawn shop has a 7 1/2" barrel.  I actually prefer the 5 1/2" barrel.  The longer under-lug does look nicer.  I wouldda liked a stainless gun better also.  Sometimes we get caught in a downpour and some of the places we hunt are really bad muddy.

Is there a difference in the quality of the triggers out-of-the-box?

Can't speak for the triggers but the Super doesn't come with a 5 1/2" barrel. Buy the super and you won't regret it.

I'd get the Redhawk to keep from hauling all the extra weight around.

My Redhawk is a 5.5" stainless 45 Colt and the trigger on it is a bit heavy but very crisp.  It's easy to hit with the way it is, without any creep.  DP

Hello,

I have owned both and found the Super Red Hawk to be the best shooter for several reasons.  1. It is heavier and handles the recoil of several cylinders full of heavily loaded 240 gr's much better than the Redhawk.  2. On mine the Super Redhawk had a better double action trigger right out of the box. 3. I'm not sure why but the Super Redhawk was slightly more accurate.

That being said the 5 1/2" Redhawk was handy as far as carry goes. The 7 1/2' SRH felt unweildy until you got ready to shoot - then it felt fine.   I also had a Winchester "Ranger" lever action in 44 mag at the same time I had the Redhawk and actually both made me wish I had the SRH 7 1/2' back again.  The darn carbine had "cheek slap tendencies" which you had to be careful with and the Redhawk just did not chrony loads as well as I hoped.

A 5.5" blued Redhawk might linger on a dealers' shelf unless he priced it accordingly.

Regards,

 :) :) :)

I'm NOT a Ruger fan as is obvious to anyone who's read many of my posts still given the choice between a RH and a SRH I'd take the RH any day over the SRH which to my eyes is just plain UGLY. The RH is old tech ala the Security Six and the SRH is new tech like the SP and GP series guns.

AAAHHHH , Mr. Graybeard , sure wish you were a Ruger fan !   And yes the SRHs are ugly.........however beauty is in the eyes of the beholder !  My SRH in 454 is really fun to shoot, even with the heavest of loads....and by the way, it will take those heavy loads for a long , long , time.  That being said, my redhawk is a 4 inch 44 mag, I like it........my SRH is a scoped, 7 1/2 incher.  That my be a good question,  do ya have plans to scope your handgun ?  The SRH takes to being scoped very well.  Both would serve you well , its a shame ya can't handle both at the same time to help make up your mind............good luck

Back when I had Taurus Raging Bulls in both .454 Casull and .480 Ruger I let lots of folks shoot both with full power loads. Uniformly the one comment made to me by Ruger SRH owners was that their SRH in .44 magnum kicked as bad or worse than the RBs in .454 and .480. I've shot SRH .44s. I tend to agree with them.

I've never shot a RB.......seen some though.  If I remember right, do they not have a massive under-lug ??  Could it be the extra barrel weight (if I'm right on the under-lug)takes some of the sting out of it.  My SRH now has Hogue grips , don't remember the model.  Ruger is putting a Hogue grip on the SRH now ( at least the 454 ),  even it wasn't as good as the one I put on mine. I haven't shot all the 44s out there , ones that come to mind :  S&W 29 , 6 incher.......Ruger Blk Hawk........my 4 inch Redhawk....and my recent accusation , a 7 1/2 inch Super Blk Hwk Bisley Hunter, and honest ..My "old " SRH which was a 9 1/2, 44 , was the easiest to shoot of the bunch.  ( maybe the 9 1/2 incher had something to do with it.   Come on GB , come on over to the dark side.......buy yourself another Ruger !  (I'm sure you've owned a few)

All in fun.........regards  Irold

Never having shot a super I am going to have opinion but we all have one just like buttholes, right.  If I were going to carry it the weight will be an issue.  The redhawk will not have a real nice trigger but its not bad and fixable.  Its a wonderful gun having owned and shot my blued gun for over 15 years it would be one of the last guns I would part with.  Its heavy eneogh to tame the 44 but light eneogh it carries pretty nice. accuracy on mine has always been wonderful.  It has brought several new centerfire handgun shooters to believe and love the wonderful 44 mag cartidge.  I think the number is about 5 converts now. Everyones grip and handsize is different as is there perception of recoil and pain but if its bargain priced you will be missing the show not to buy it.  Your milage will vary.

have both
The super is in 454 and stays in the safe most of the time . The RH is 45 Colt and is a great gun . I shoot a load that equals a 44 mag. load that is for Rugers , FA and TC or such ( they will / did destory a S&W 29 ) .
The honest ansewer is the super will digest more loads , will not flex as much and is a better platform for a scope. The Redhawk is lighter but still strong . Will carry better .

I have 71/2 inch 41 mag redhawk and a super 44 with a 91/2 inch barrel. The Redhawk will out shoot the super. Of coarse its a 41 and I believe the 41 is a more accurate round, and will do anything the 44 will do with less recoil. Not that I find my super to have anything close to punishing recoil, and I've shot some 300 gr. loads in it that I wouldn't shoot in any other hand gun.  The redhawk is also more carry friendly. The 91/2 barrel doesn't help either. If I was buying again I'd opt for the 71/2 inch. If you don't mind lugging around a hand gun that almost should have wheels on it, the super is a fine hand gun.

Weight difference?   According to the information  on Ruger's website --  a 7 1/2 Redhawk weighs 54 ounces and 7 1/2 inch Super Redhawk weighs 53 ounces.  Now how about that?

Way to screw up a good post and open debate with facts.   ;)   I have never shot a srh, just always thought they were a bit ugly.  That said I guess the weight issue is out the door and only fit, feel, and personal preference is in the debate now.  My redhawk has always shot extremely well.  I have shot around 3000 plus rounds thru her and she is it seems as tight as the day I got it.  If only everything in life had that durability rating. :o

The part about the super almost needing wheels was just a joke, for those that didn't think it was. I like the feel and balance of the redhawk better , but again I have never handled a super with a 71/2, I'm sure the 91/2 inch barrel on my super has something to do with handling attributes and balance.

I finally got a chance to see and handle the Redhawk.  The pawn shop can legally release it on the 11th of OCT.  As it turns out, it has the 5 1/2 inch barrel that I wanted.  The gun is in perfect condition!

I will pay $375.00 for it.  It's been awhile since I've been this fired-up over a new acquisition.

I forgot all about this thread.  The Redhawk is now home with me.  It's a blue one and I am really liking my gun!  It is literally in "like new" condition.  This buy is the best gun-deal I've ever done.  These bigole Russian boars are gonna wish I never got my hands on this gun!

At the price you mentioned it was a steal of a deal whether you really wanted it or not.
Since its a 5.5" (my personal favorite length for any revolver) I say you "done good!"

Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 MAG.  Recoil isn't a problem.

I have a bunch of .44 Mags including a RH and an SRH.  I got one of the new 4" RHs in stainless steel. I like both of them but the SRH is so heavy it's like dragging a dead pig around with you. I use the RH far more than the SRH.  Ruger triggers are usually very crisp but far too heavy a pull for me.  I typically put a Wolf Spring kit in my double action Rugers although, if the opportunity allows, I prefer shooting single action anyway.

Weight -- I have both the SRH and the RH and the SRH is like carrying a dead pig around with you.  I have several .44 Mags and I just bought the new RH in the 4" stainless steel version.  It shoots as well, out of the box, as the SRH does after a little accurizing work on the SRH.  Ruger triggers are usually crisp but heavy.  A Wolf Spring Kit is a good investment for double action Rugers.  Ruger .44s have some advantages over other production .44s. They are stronger and they usually come with a 0.004" cylinder gap [Smiths set theirs at 0.006" to 0.007" which I think is too much if you want exceptional accuracy]. The disadvantage is that the cylinder throats are often not uniform but this is an easy problem to fix or to have fixed. For some reason, the cylinder throat problem doesn't seem to exist in the Redhawks as much as in the Super Blackhawks. Nevertheless, it's easy to fix.

Sorry for the double post. My computer crashed during the first one and I didn't think it went out.
