Win 94 '68 and cast bullets.
« on: September 28, 2009, 09:45:58 AM »
I just bought a Win 94 in 30-30 for a truck gun. Since my Marlin is so much nicer looking I wanted this gun to be the evryday carry while bumping around. Any way I was hoping it would shoot cast bullets well to make it cheaper to feed. Tried my loads of 113 and 150 gr cast. Well neither would feed from the mag into the chamber with out jamming up? I could understand why the 113 gr wouldn't feed -pretty short with wide nose but the 150 gr should as it is very close the the Win 150 gr profile! I'm thinking I just need to load it longer to cure the problem, I also got the Lee 170 mold coming as it was a great excuse to get another mold-longer nose profile! PS the Marlin 336 loads these load with out a hitch-smooth as silk! ???

Does it feed jacketed rounds OK?  I've never had problems feeding 120 gr, 150 gr, or 173 gr cast bullets through any of my 94's--pre-64 or the vintage you have.  Those versions made from 1964 through about 1971 or thereabouts had a stamped steel  cartridge lifter that most of the time would become problematical, resulting in jams.  Lots of times the cartridge you'd be trying to chamber would slip below that lifter.  The fix was to get a newer, sintered-steel lifter that came out to the public around late 1971 and replace that tinny stamping with it -the problem should go away. My post-64 was made with one of those later lifters and has never failed to feed anything I've put through it--even those stubby little jacketed 110 grainers made by Hornaday and intended for the 30 carbine.  The short lead 311008 Lyman bullet (115 grain) feeds just as well as any longer bullet.  Check out that lifter in that 94 of yours.  If it's the tinny stamping, it most likely needs replacing. A capable gunsmith--preferably one who is old, crusty and bitches about shortymags and various other newfangled things is the kind of guy you should have look at this 94--let him fix it and you'll  have a dependable truck gun that should last a lifetime.

Yep it feeds Win 150/170 gr like butter, even 130 Speer reloads!! I think maybe your right it has a forked feed ramp!  Well you got me thinking and I seated some out too the Win 150 gr OAL 2.450" and guess what they feed fine!! So that was the problem I have to load them longer! I don't think I can get the 113gr to load that long so I'll just shoot the 150 and 170 gr slugs out of it! ;D
