Mortality examples: D'ja ever notice....?
« on: September 28, 2009, 11:28:09 AM »
D'ja ever notice that the number of casualties for some events in other countries seem amazingly high? For example, those ferry accidents in southeast Asian countries that take 2000 lives, or the scaffolding collapses in Hong Kong that kill 400 workers. Flooding in Bangladesh that kills 10,000.

Then there are the 50 car pileups on US interstates and nobody gets hurt. Amazing.

It's when you see the pictures of africa with 300 people hanging on the side of the bus, every mode of transportation is horribly overcrowded.

How could I forget, the famous Indian bus accident where 250 people perish when the bus drops into a gorge while driving on a mountain road.

It says alot about our civility here. Coast Guard regulations, qualified employee's, inspections, etc. etc.
DOT rules and regulations, etc.
Some folks beef about laws and regulations, etc., but really, isn't that was seperates us ( and other civilized nations ) from incidents like you mention.
When we do get an "incident", like the person trampled to death at a wall-mart last Christmas season, it makes the news big time, but how about dozens of folks trampled to death at soccer riots, etc. in other countries. Just a few weeks ago it seems that in one of the Muslem countries, at some sort of Muslem holiday get-together, dozens were sampeded to death by the crowd, because of some "rumor" causing mass panic.
All-in-all, we have it pretty good here, I think.

Yup sometimes people forget we are a Rebuplic, governed by laws. Some good, some not so good.
