This is a gray that darted out in front of my truck the other night . I stopped to pick him up , but for obvious reasons , I didn't .

Without having the lesion to examine, I will venture a quess that this is the result of a mixed anaerobic infection.  Could be a fungal infection but my first guess is anaerobic.  The massive swelling is indicative of gas production common with anaeobic growth.  These organisms are extremely sensitive to molecular oxygen and are capable of growth only in deep tissue pockets.  In this location the gas is trapped and the surrounding tissue swells; gaseous gangrene, if the right bacterium is present.

I think it highly unlikely that the disease is contagious and therefore would be of little consequence to the trapper.

Now as for the fur value, the tails on gray fox, at least last year, were very important to the value of the pelt.  Seems current fashion demands are calling for the tails for trim.

Had a coyote once with a growth on its chest between its front two legs that looked awfully similar to this. Was about as large as a football, and the coloration was very similar (almost like a deep, dark bruised coloration with some bloody discharge here and there across the surface region).
I didn't skin that one.
I've often wondered how many see cancerous or benign tumor growths that we never really know about. It seems to occur with alarming frequency in dogs, and I don't see why other canines would be just as susceptable. An external or sub-surface growth could expand out through the epidermal tissue layers, especially if the skin was scratched, rubbed, or bitten if the swelling was irritating to the critter????
Just curious...

Jim , just my opinion cause I aint no vet by any means . I think the tumors you see on dogs are usually older dogs or that particular breed is prone to getting them . I dont think wild K9s live long enough to aquire them . Again , thats just an opinion .
