OK Pards I'm gonna do a show and tell on a group of nicely made leather accessories made with us Cowboy Action Shooters in mind.
Keith Wertz of Cap'n Percussion
http://www.capnpercussion.com makes some really neat Dusters or covers for the actions and barrels of the type guns used in CAS games. These are intended to keep the open actions of our guns clean and dry. Since the safety rules in effect for CAS require the actions be open at all times except when on the firing line this exposes the delicate insides of the actions to all sorts of dust, dirt and water. These Dusters are made of butter soft leather and are nicely finished to look good on any gun.
Now dust isn't so much of a problem here in Bama for me like it would be in a more dry climate but rain for sure is. As a matter of fact on my first CAS shoot back in March '03 it was raining just about the entire match and these dusters sure would have come in handy then.
Here are some photos I've taken down by the corral fence to show ya what they look like on my guns.
Have you pards ever seen such a neat idea for keeping the actions clean and free of contamination while still looking real cowboy? These dusters are available for the barrels and actions of SXS shotguns, Winchester Model 97 shotguns and most all the lever action rifles used by CAS shooters. See the web site for full descriptions of what is available.
Keith also has a couple other goodies for CAS shooters. One is a badge holder which for some reason I failed to get an example of. Me thinks maybe because I forgot to ask? Yup I think that's the reason. But all is not lost. Here is the photo from Keith's site of them.
From Keith's site he offers this on the badge holder:
"Badge Holder: This is the same badge holder that comes with our Shooting Vest. Rugged yet tasteful this little baby can go anywhere and look in place. Designed to frame and show off your badge with quality and price that you won't believe."
Now I did get an example of the all leather vest and pard let me tell ya it is a nice one. Sizing is a wee bit on the small side so order larger than normal is my advice. I'd like to see the addition of an XXL at least and for some pards an XXXL would come in handy. I got the XL and it fits fine thru the body on my 5' 7" 270 pound frame. Don't quite meet in the front which kinda makes me look like John Wayne in his movies where his vest didn't meet in the middle over his big belly either. Don't ya'll think I look like John Wayne in this photo?
What you mean no! Then how about in this one?
Still no huh? OK I guess you're right I really don't. :-D
But I'll tell ya what. You buy one of these nice full leather vests from Keith and ya might not look like John Wayne either but you'll shore nuff be a good looking cowboy at the next match. They are nice enough for dress up at the fancier events and dinners also. You can bet I'll be wearing mine at more than just CAS events. Been wanting me a nice leather vest like this for a long time. Now I got me one. You should get you one too.
Since Keith explains it a lot better than I could I'm gonna copy and paste in some descriptions from his site of the vest for ya.
"Here's a Shooting Vest that someone should have thought of a hundred and 30 years ago. Unfortunately, they didn't have the materials to make it work back then. But we do now! This vest has a secret pad inside that absorbs shock. A lot of shock. Oh, you'll still feel that old mule ear or pump shotgun when you yank the trigger, but by the end of the day you'll be glad you used it. It not only saves the wear and tear on the shoulder, but take the pad out and you're ready to go dancing. Any of you posse's that would like to have your name emblazoned on the back, please contact us for special pricing, custom design and delivery."
"Made from premium Italian lambskin leather with solid brass conchos, this vest is timeless in design and styled so that John Wayne would be proud. Note how it is cut just long enough to give a sliming appearance, but short enough to keep out of the way of your shooting irons. Comes complete with matching badge holder shown."
"The back of this quality vest is also full leather. Not canvas or cloth as in some cheaper products. This gives it an elegant almost dressy look, but maintains it's "work vest" heritage. Looks right for the range and right for the ball. Note how the back is cut slightly higher to make it easy to grab your ammo."
"Here's the magic. This 1/4" thick foam pad is made of a modern high impact foam. Soft and flexible enough to contour to your shoulder, this little goodie will take shock after shock and still come back for more. The vest is designed with a pocket on both sides so it's for a rightie or a south paw. Use the extra pocket to keep your sunglasses or Palm Pilot. Fully lined too."
"Just like the Duke's, this vest has three external pockets. Perfect for watch, fob and fixin's. Fine stitching with quality that stands out means that this is a vest that you can wear for years and be proud to own."
