I'm not sure what the difference is with a 243 Improved but probably it's the shoulder angle. One thing for sure, the 243 Imp is not a standard factory cartridge. The 243 Win is a very accurate and reasonably powerful cartridge that was once a "wildcat" based on a necked down 308 case. It shoots a 6mm bullet with a weight range from 70 to 110 grains. Excellent for whitetail deer and smaller game.

Usually improved cartridges have less angle on the shoulder and the case sides are straighter. This allows them to hold a small amount more powder. If the chamber is cut properly you simply fire a standard case ( a normal .243 in this case) in the chamber and you fire form to the chamber dimensions. You have to have dies for the improved version to reload the fire formed cases.

As Iowagan said the difference is mainly in the shoulder angle and they hold a small amount of powder more than a standard 243 Win. This normally only gives you the potential for an additional couple hundred fps increase over the standard caliber. Unless you reload I would stay with the standard 243 and even then I'm not sure the added speed is worth all the effort.
