Here’s a quick report on the last 9 days of hunting I’ve had. A good mate of mine flew up from Brisbane to try his hand at the local pigs and goats. We headed down to a place near Stonehenge for the first few days – the dust storms made life a bit more annoying, and we had trouble finding anything worth shooting for the first couple of days. Eventually we found some pigs along the river, with the 1st boar going down to my ruger hawkeye 308. he turned out to be the best pig for the trip – fairly chunky and in good nick.



A bit further on and we came across a small mob of youngish pigs, who seemed to know something was wrong, but didn’t run. I tried to direct my mate onto them, since he had the shotty, and I wanted him to get his first pig. The pigs decided to bolt before my mate could locate them through the low scrub. He hit one – got away though, and I got one down with the 308 before the rest disappeared.



We had  a pretty good camp setup – fixed roof, tank water etc. I set up my new clay target thrower and some small steel gongs about 175 yards away for some camp fun.



Plenty of these around at the moment.



Went to another property and got stuck into a few goats. The speer 130gr HP’s are just an awesome goat pill. They just drop instantly – even with not so perfect shot placement. I was very impressed by them, and will continue to use them for goats. For the pigs I used 165 nosler BT’s and 165 speer BTSP pills. Both pills shoot to the same POI, and work well on the hogs – however I am using up my remaining stock of these before I go over my preferred 150gr hornady interlocks.

On the last day my mate finally got his pigs – a small boar and sow. I got a couple too – this was a fast and furious little killing session this one:

Looks like you both had a good trip in the end . The dust storms where pretty thick out here on the coast , got down to about 300 metres visability . The wind and dust must have put game into cover out at Longreach . When I walked outside this morning it smelt just like I was out at Bollon with the dust settled everywhere . Must have been annoying camping in it , what song where you listening too over dinner ? Another one bites the dust  Poor attempts at ribbing don't work over the internet Brian , forgive me  .

Good stuff mate ,  Shotties rule ! , and .357's ? How did the little magnum perform , your mate used factory ammo didn't he , looks like a hollow point blew up that billies lungs ? Got mine shooting sweet now , can't wait to to blood her , question now is which rifle do I blood first , .357 mag or my new .44 mag

Looks like there's plenty of young pigs running about , which is double good news as I hear the boxes are closed just now , only paying 80 cents a kilo . Looks good for a bumper pig harvest next year , at least until the boxes open when the littlies are over 30 kilograms . Those black , white tan and champane coloured goats are pretty , I've got a quiver I made from a goat that looked a lot like that nanny

all fair comments mate.

the 357 did a good job on the goat - didn't really spend time analising the shots though.
the first shot pulled him up very promptly, and the second one just helped the inevitable happen a little bit quicker. i'm pretty sure it was hit with the winchester 158gr hollowpoints, and i wouldn't hesitate to use them on goats since they worked so well. pigs on the other hand...........

i hope that like you say the pigs will get better and better for next year - gonna have to get on the bike in the next few weeks and cover some miles i reckon.

Yep,that last pic could certainly take out the AHN award for the best 1000yd stare.   Nice work on pigs too fellas.

Nice hunt, looks like you had a good time.... looks a bit dry, the dams looking ok  for the cattle? (in CQ we have not had rain for months)
and next time i like to see a Charlies angels pose.

chappers - the dams are all fine for the time being, but things are definately drying up that's for sure. - by CQ do you mean central queensland?  - if so where abouts?
