what 22 rifle to get ?
« on: September 30, 2009, 05:23:06 PM »
Hi,I will get right to the point, I am looking for a bolt action repeater rifle and a semiautomatic 22 rimfire that does NOT use a detachable magazine.I do not like the looks of a detachable mag . I want the rifle to have a good trigger pull (or easy to get that way) I want accuracy(less than inch at 50 yards with hunting ammo).who makes what I am looking for ? Where can I find ? How much ? Thanks ,Craig

And, I would suppose you would like egg in your beer too?

A bolt action 22 with a tubular magazine, if a tubular magazine is a must have requirement, go to the Marlin web site and select  one...

For the 22 automatic with a tubular magazine, only a Browning 22 automatic would be good enough for me...

Your accuracy requirements are unrealistic, with hunting ammunition, for the 22 rifle styles you specify...!

If you want less than an inch group, with a bolt action, at fifty yards, by a CZ 452 or 452. They do have magazines, not tubular feed.

If you want a group of less than an inch at fifty yards, with a 22 automatic, your going to spend some money... However, you could start with a Ruger 10/22T and refine it a little...!  Some Ruger 10/22T's will do less than one inch at fifty yards, with good ammunition, right out of the box. Some, but not all...!

Find one of the old Weatherby MKXXII semiauto rifles with tube magazine and it will likely meet your criteria. Mine sure did and I sure wish I'd not sold it. I do agree by the way I hate clip magazines and really would like to return to tube magazines for my .22LR rifles.

Chiming in from Baghdad...

I am not trying to discredit the Ruger or the Browning, but the marlin Model 60 is still a fantastic rifle and hard to beat for the price. I believe you can find them just about anywhere for around $135...even Wally World. Tube feed, semi-auto and worth at least a look.

I have one that I bought in '84 for $64 NIB and it still puts sub 1-inch groups at 50 yds...easily!

As far as a bolt action without a magazine, good luck meeting your accuracy requirements without putting a dent in your wallet. If you willing to wiggle one way or the other, the CZ 452 & 453 are great rifles. And don't forget Marlin's Golden 39a...lever-action, but they're shooters!

Cheers!

if you get a marlin bolt action you can get a trigger from midway and others to get the trigger pull you want without breaking the bank. think one is called rifle basix? may be coupla others, bubba.

Marlin is what you want on both accounts and yes, get the Rifle Basix trigger for the bolt action one and you'll need a smith for the model 60(I think).

I know it doesn't meet the criteria the poster is requesting , and I don't want to hijack thread , but was curious has anyone used one of the little Henry H001 .22LR Lever Action Rifle .. Looks like they could be a lot of fun pinking if quality is there?

The Marlin 60 is one the best all time huntingsporter .22's in the semi auto catagory, Ive had differnt makes and models and its hard to beat the Model 60 for what it does and what you get.....just keep it clean, For new tuber's The new made Taurus model 63 in .22lr is another that comes to mind, Ive seen the new 63 and I can say for the money spent there allot of value there, only plastic on that .22 is the buttplate! the other's worthy of mention are no longer made but can be found in good condition the Remington nylon66, the Remington 552 speedmaster, the Winchester 190 all come to mind, the whole slew of used old .22's Mossberg, Savage Stevens, Colt-Colteer, High Standard, Marlin, these mfg all made semi auto tube mag.22's.

I like boltaction .22's but for hunting I use a pump .22, Taurus makes some nice ones with steel receivers
Winchester/Remington/Browning made some nice hunting pump .22's, I have a Taurus 72C-S which is
.22mag /Pump action carbine / all stainless, One hell of a nice .22 allot of value for not that much money.

New Bolt action .22's with tube fed mag I'd suggest a Marlin, I still have a old Marlin 81 that's the most accurate of the bunch, otherwise its anyones pick of used .22's a most mfg's made a model with a tube fed mag.

Bolt action-
One of the CZ 452 or 453 rifles!  The mag sits flush.  www.cz-usa.com in the small bore rifle section.
If it has to be a tube fed there are hundreds of models out there from western auto (Win, springfield, remington, Savage, and others), and others that need some TLC and a home.
Semi Auto- with a tube.
Either the Marlin, the Browning, an old Browning BARII,
But like I said in the bolt action section the 10/22 mag sits flush.

Personally I like the safety of the detachable mags over the tube guns.
the tubes load from the front and you tend to look strait down the barrel.  If you had one in the chamber at the time.....  I find a lot of people with one in the chamber that they think was empty.  That empty one usually has a ding in it from being hit.

Remington built bolt action models with tube feed, and they are very accurate.  I believe the model is 582.

ive got a marlin 60 that will do that easy. a full inch!!of course im talking good hunting ammo.. cci is the cleanest ive seen ...velocitor carries the kill power of a 38 ... this from a ruger rep who was at a one of those shows that gunshops have where the various representatives come to the store..
now. my marlin will bust a brick at 100  yrds with velocitors.. my 38 hasn t really busted one yet at 15 or 20 yrds .. now it rolled the brick purty good .. so i guess its just the small size of the velocitor the helps it bust a brick..
of course you fellow gun owners,, not gonna oo an ah when they see you got a marlin 60... but if you like to lay a dollar or two on a shot now an then,,that just makes them easy pickens if they think the little gun won t shoot with thier high end gun..put it this way with good scope ,,i can make a ragged hole..[sometimes bigger,, sometimes smaller],,at 50 yrds.. :)... ive got one that actually shoots with my cz452,at 50.. the rest don t have scopes. good luck...

A Remington 552 semi-auto, tube fed 15 shot LR, 17 longs or 21 shorts (maybe 20 shorts in the tube)
Any make and any mix, clean if you want. It will always shoot.
Accuracy good enough for hunting at 22 rimfire ranges

I have seen a lot of Marlins that will group less than 1" at 50 yards with the Hollow Point Ammo the particular rifle preferred.

I just looked at the Marlin Web Site briefly and see their Model 981T is a Synthetic Stocked Bolt Action with a Tube Magazine.

A buddy of mine used to have a Marlin Model 2000L Single Shot Bolt Action Target Rifle. We put a Rifle Basix Trigger in it, an easy job and it turned out great. We had his Rifle Basix Trigger set right at 2 pounds. That Rifle would shoot 1/2" or slightly less groups at 50 yards when fed ammo it preferred. In fact he used that very rifle at our local indoor shooting range for several winters in our Bench Rest Competitions.

I have had a few Marlin Model 60's over the years. When scoped they would all shoot 1" or less groups at 50 yards when fed ammo the individual rifle preferred.

As has been stated there are several other options in the used gun market as many years ago tube fed magazines were the norm.

Larry

PS personally I do not like Tube Fed Magazines , but that's just me.

I also have a Rem. 552, it's been stone reliable since i bought it in the 70's.  It's home is out in the barn, uncleaned, and it keeps on keeping on!

Personally, i really like tube feed guns.

I just got one of those in Oct.
Shot just over 1" at 50yd with bulk ammo on a coat rest.
I think with a better rear sight it would do even better.
Magazine feeds perfectly so far. Did I mention it will feed shorts? Lots of them. ;D

Tube mag. ? rounds hitting each other not good for accy. yes some shoot well at the range but after a few hours of being toted around the woods ? Just asking . The ones i have had with tube mags were ok but none came close to the Ruger M7722 . And the mag comes out when i ride from one place to another to hunt ( law here ) . I think more ammo is messed up loading and unloading along with being chambered than any other way .
Auto , never had a stock one that would beat the bolt gun or lever action . Had a Ruger 1022 that had a custom bbl etc that was good .
but not as good as the M7722 so i sold it .
Good luck on your quest.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Around here a loaded clip with the gun nearby is a loaded gun.
Besides tube mag is MUCH easier to load.

How much easier do you need than a clip magazine?  And, the tube is more difficult to unload.

Shoot a brick with me and see who's thumb turns red.
I would even wager that a Model 60 will eat a brick of ammo faster than a 10/22.

No it's easier to unload. Slide the inner tube all the way out and pour them back in the box.

If you're shooting a brick of ammo for hunting, you need to work on your marksmanship (he did say "hunting ammo").  Besides, my thumb is tougher than that.  And, unless you hold the gun upside down, when you try to pour them out the tube, they will drop out of the cutout in the magazine (not to mention that I shoot my hunting ammo out of the 50 round boxes and if you try to pour shells into those, you end up picking rounds out of the dirt).  Finally, I can top off my mag's quite easily while hunting, without having to pull a 2 foot tube out and basically waving my hand over my head while doing it (tends to scare the squirrels).

I like tube fed .22's.  No magazine in the way for hand carrying, hold more ammo.  The only thing I don't like is for some reason, people tend to point the rifles muzzle in all sorts of directions when they are unloading it, then after the tube is empty, they empty the chamber....Not good.  I think less experienced shooters find it more natural to empty a chamber, and remove a magazine while keeping the muzzle in a safe direction.  Then again, I have seen guys pick up a gun, and pull the trigger to see if a gun is loaded, so.....

It would be hard to beat a Rem 34 or a 512.  I like the tube feeds too.  My daughter and I refinished a 34 a couple years ago, one of the oldies but goodies!
