'Nother Rossi
« on: September 30, 2009, 05:23:07 PM »
Swung by one of the Candy Stores today and setting there on the shelf was a 16" 357 Rossi with a big loop and saddle ring on the side.  Asked to carress it and she cycled nice, trigger, clean break and light, all in all, nice little package.  Talking to the owner, he said this was the third time it sat on the shelf and hadn't left the store yet.  First buyer had it on lay-a-way and then couldn't pass the background check, second buyer lost their job and wanted out of the deal, so back on the shelf.  Wasn't really lookin for one, but she said "Save me from this madness".  Course bein the gentleman I am, I did.  They have really gone up in price around here and this one was still at $449.99, about $100 cheaper than the standard model.  This one joins another 357, 24" Octagon barrel, 20" round 44 Mag and 2- 454 Casulls.  One of them is the 20" round and the other is 16" stainless with Williams Firesights.  Those sights are Awesome!  I can see them!  Gonna have to look into getting them on the others.  These darn little levers are just like 'tater chips.  DP

One of the handiest rifles made. 33 inches, under 5lbs, holds a lot of ammo, the antis think it is a Daisy. I have one and like the tinkertoy safety. Better than a cross bolt that you don't see and that flicks itself. You get to dry fire to your heart's content. The yellow follower is supposed to crap out and you cannot just slap other kinds of sights on it, which is what keeps me from buying a Rossi in any more potent caliber. It will be my deer gun this year. My buddy sitting next to me with a scoped 30-06 can have the 50+ yard shots. My Microgroove 44 is shooting shotgun groups with some ammo and that may bug me enough to buy a stainless Rossi to spite it for next year.

Check out the Williams Firesights made for them.  My Stainless 454 Casull Trapper has them and they work great.  Been lookin at a peep setup as well for the Rossi's.  I say, go for the new Rossi to really make that micro-groove mad.  The 454's are a mini 45-70, lots of power in a small package.  DP

You COULD simply order a set of the FireSights from Rossi's Parts Dept - at least they should fit OK.

wreckhog, I (not so simply) added different peep sights to both my .357 & .45 16" Big Loops.

On the .357, I installed a Williams 5D-94AE top-mount peep into two holes, I D/T'd into the top rails near the locking lugs.

On the .45, I installed a Skinner Lo-Pro as a bolt peep, into a handmade safety replacement plug I made, then D/T'd for the Lo-Pro - but a safety could certainly be dehorned & D/T'd as a base as well.

I have a Stainless 357 trapper on order, can't wait for it to get here. I love the 357 lever guns.

Steve Young is working on another peep sight setup for the Rossi's.

wreakhog:  if your 44 micro-groove barrel is giving you shotgun groups then drop on down to Veral Smith's forum further down the line ob Graybeard's here and learn what he says about fire/bore lapping micro-groove barrels.  Then get one of his fire lapping kits and get that micro-groove to shoot like it should.

Or, you can go to the Beartooth Bullets website and read what Marshall Stanton has done by fire lapping micro-groove barrrels, and others.  I have used his techniques/process, which is exactly what Veral Smith recommends, with incredible results in my micro-groove barrels.  My results have shrunk my groups to half what they used to be at 50 yds, at 100 yds, or even better.  For example - my Winchester Big Bore 444 came with a micro-groove barrel (probably the same as yours) and with jacketed slugs got me no more than 2" at 50 yds - now it shoots to less than one inch at 100 yds.  Cast slugs would not shoot at all and gave me shotgun patterns at 50 yds but after fire lapping group to one hole at 100 yds.  The process works.
