Deer Hunting For Antlers or Meat?
« on: September 30, 2009, 09:56:30 PM »
Are you a trophy hunter, or looking to fill the freezer?

In my neighborhood, I think most are trophy hunters. Which is fine with me. I do it mostly for the meat. We usually take enough to eat for the year, and have enough to make jerky for upcoming season. Although, I do like it when a pair of antlers walks my way ;). What say yee? ???

Both.  Each year I hunt Maine, Catskill Mnt.'s in NY, and PA.  Maine first, big buck or nothing.  Average maybe 50%.  Always get doe tags for NY and PA, and its about 100% between them.  One doe gives me the meat I need for the season, then I concentrate on Bucks.  Any extra meat I cant use, I give away.

Now that I no longer live in southern IN, I hunt there during black powder season for the fellowship.  In the last 4 years I haven't squeezed a trigger, but wr've had one heck of a good time!  My brother hosts three of us, so we have a foursome for close to a week.  We do make it up on the hill to the stands once in a while, but generally sleep in late, eat way too much, play cards until the wee hours of the morning, and once in a while someone busts a doe for meat.

I mostly hunt for meat.

I've only taken three deer in my life.  Out of those three I have one 8pt mounted on the wall, and an 8pt antler mount on the wall.  As far as I'm concerned I've already got two really nice sets of antlers on the wall and if any more show up it's a bonus.  I don't really care too much about the antlers, this year I want some meat.  If the meat has antlers on it, then that's a bonus but not the main goal.

Both really , we get to kill 6 deer 3 of which can be bucks . and if we want we can buy more doe tags . in my home county we can kill 2 deer each day of a two week ML season and each day of a seven weel reg. firearms season . does legal every day .
That being the law i can kill all the meat we want /need and all my friends want with doe tags . I keep the buck tags for big or at least nice bucks until the last few days and then its what ever comes by .
When i started hunting back in the 60's it was one buck a year and the first one by got shot as we would go weeks not seeing /jumping a deer
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

When I am deer hunting, I am simply hunting for a legal deer.  That being said, I have not killed a buck of any size in the last 5 or 6 years.  I do, however, usually shoot one or 2 does every year.  One for my consumption, the other I donate to Hunters Helping the Hungry.

I am limited to hunting public lands, and finding a buck of any size there is quite difficult.  Therefore, if it's a legal buck, I am going to try to take it.

A little of both.  I try to get a mature buck each year and always will kill a doe for meat. I rarely keep the meat from a buck, it instead goes to the taxidermist who is usually too busy to hunt.  I get a nice discount and they get their meat.  Works out great for both of us. I can't go a year without some deer sausage or jerky.  Lately I have become addicted to the snack sticks, too.  :)

Thanks, Dinny

:-\ I have come to consider myself just a deer hunter. They are my favorite big game animal. Mulies first, then whitetails. Have shot some nice ones of each, but decided years ago, trophy hunting was the ruination of our sport. >:( ??? If you disagree fine, but the old timers looked on it as a way to improve their sport, today it is a way to make MONEY .... :-[ :'( . So that said, I used to hunt for both meat and antlers here in Wy. as my wife loved venison and I liked it. Now she is gone, so I mostly look for a nice buck, and also shoot does for folks around town who like the meat.  Both styles of hunting have a place, if done for the correct reasons.    :D ;) :)

Never found a good way to cook antlers.  The only bucks that I take are to improve the herd, so they're seldom "trophy" class.  My grandkids take plenty of big bucks off of my place, so I don't even have to worry about getting enough meat anymore.  I guess I'll have to get at least one of them interested in managing the herd soon.  Life is good!

I hunt Texas and Oklahoma.  I try to take the 4 does during bow season, it is mandatory on our lease to shoot all the does legal to take on your liscense and then I look for a nice set of horns.  I have only taken one deer with less than 10 points in the last 6 years and he is a huge 8 point.  In Oklahoma I generally hunt for a trophy as by then I have ll the deer meat I can use.

I hunt SE Indiana and usually shoot one doe for me and others for FHFH and friends.  I have a lifetime license.  However, I really like it when a nice rack comes along.

meat-most of the bucks don't have good racks where I hunt so I'd rather shoot a big fat doe.

I just checked the freezer. I only have about 10 pounds left, thank goodness Deer season around the corner ;D

Should have enough to get some jerky made up for opening day. ;)

Lonny: funny you mentions that!  I just gave a large bag full of venison from the freezer to my oldest grandson last Sunday.  He's a poor, self-supporting college guy who eats like a bear, so I was glad to help stock his freezer.  I told him to eat up because grocery season was here again.  My neighbor came over Monday evening and said he would go in halves with me if I wanted to shoot a deer and get it made into various salamies, bologna, etc.  I had given him some for helping watch the house when the wife and I were on vacation, and he fell in love with the flavors.  So-o-o-o I, too, am happy that grocery season is open again here in southern MI.

Best of luck this fall!

The talk about grocery season reminds me of what my wife said a few weeks ago.  It made me realize I'm a lucky man.  She said that she was really hoping that I'd get another deer this year or more than one so we'd have more meat.  I told her it means that I may have to spend more time hunting and she said that was just fine.  Man, I was ready to renew my wedding vows right there and then!  I've got a great wife.

I understand a lot of my neighbors antler hunt, and that's fine.  I let a lot of bucks walk simply because I got a 9 point in my garage.  I don't see the need of shooting bucks any smaller than that unless they need to be culled (injured or deformed).

If I see one that is bigger than the 9 point, I'll shoot him on principal.  Than he'll take the place of honor in the garage.

Beyond that, I fill the freezer.  Like teddy, my wife incorporates my venison take into her shopping.  I don't think she's bought ground beef since 1998.

Teddy12b- "Man, I was ready to renew my wedding vows right there and then!  I've got a great wife."

I have one who also likes the venesin to save on groceries. But she tells everyone come Deer season we will be divorced for a couple months(I hunt out the back door, also have a spot between home and work) Got to love them. She does haul them to the butcher if needed, because of an early morning kill. Wouldnt want to waste an afternoon driving ;)

Meat hunter here, but usually wind up with a buck every year, nothing that would make the books...but thats not why Im out there.
To me...sitting down the morning after a harvest to a Tenderloin and egg breakfast with biscuits and gravy is just hard to beat.  ;D

Hmmm tenderloins for breakfast? Never thought about that!
Now I do take bratwurst, if any are left over and have them for lunch the next day. My lunch is about 10 am, so I guess I could call it breakfast.

Picture this. Deer bratwurst with holes poked in them, soaked in Italian dressing, steamed with tators. Now I am one of the guys who drowns everything in ketchup, but not my steamed bratwurst. Hmmm mmm good.  ;D

I always thought antlers were a little crunchy, and they don`t take seasoning very well, it just kinda rolls off. I usually hunt for antlers the first weekend and meat after that. Started doing it that way when I first started hunting and still do it that way.

I like to bow hunt most of all. I like that time of year. I like them backstraps.
Oh but it nice to even see a monster that makes you shake! It doesn't happen often for me, but if it did it wouldn't be the same.

Try browning steak in skillet, then put in a baking dish with picante sauce, bake until tender.. Hmmm ::)

Momma is sitting right behind me. I relayed your recipe ;) Will be trying that one. Thanks

Biggest buck I have ever seen,  Had a young man with me for his first youth hunt. BIGGG oh buck walked right under us. He stopped in the creek got a drink, and wandered on. I really think the youth should be able to shoot a buck on the youth hunt ::)
