Water proof your strike anywhere matches by dipping them in candle wax.

...............and to add to that.  Gather up some of that lint/fuzz that you collect on the clothes dryer screen and keep it in a zip lock baggie along with those waterproofed matches.  Works great for starting a fire when everything around you is damp!

Clear lacquer works better.  That's how they do lifeboat matches.

Take that dryer lint and put a small tuft of it in each section of an egg carton, then pour a little wax over each section.  Break off a section as needed.  They also work great for starting your charcoal for a barbecue or a dutch oven in the cans that are made for this,
....make it count

 I used to keep a Boy Scout water-proof match container with those strike-anywhere matches in my gear.  But, then two things happened.  Those matches were determined by those smarter than we to be too dangerous to market, AND I discovered the disposable lighter!

Cut a piece of corrugated cardboard about an inch wide. Useing the strike anywhere matches, insert a match into the hole in the cardboard, skip a hole and put in another match from the opposite side. I like a roll of about a dz, roll up and tie. Melt parafin in a dbl boiler and drop the matches in briefly to get a good coating on matches and cardboard. Parafin should be liquid but not hot or it will penetrate the match head rendering it useless. I like at least 2 good coats. Those matches are hard to find anymore, and the heads and tips are much smaller than they used to be, always select matches with the biggest head and tips. When useing, slice off a match, in the cardboard. The cardboard burns hot because of the parafin, leave it on the match. Another trick is to mix vaseline into some cotton, stuff it into straws, pack it tight. Seal one end by heating and squeezing the end together, then pack the cotton tight and seal the other end. To use, slit the straw and pull some out and light it.  I cut the straws in 1/2 before packing them with the soaked cotton, I like the shorter length for carrying. They are completely waterproof. I've carried these matches like this over 40 years and they have saved the day more than once. POWDERMAN.  :D  :D

I haven't seen the diamond brand around here for many years, they were always my favorite. The generics will just have to do. These new matches are very sensitive to the melted parafin as they will absorb it into the head easily if too hot. The diamond brand wasn't that way. I fell through the ice as a kid and was a 2 mile walk from home. At least 6 in of snow covered everything. Those matches saved my butt. I love going to the woods when theres a snow on and building a little fire, just because I can. I'm healing from re injuring myself after bypass surgery 5 months ago so I can't just go and do what I want yet. Theres a small cave down over the hill I like to go to when the snow is blowing hard, I've done it for years, but I can't right now. Getting down there would be easy. I usually sit inside and have asmall fire as I watch the snow swirling down, man, I miss that. Sometimes I'll take hot dogs along. Maybe next year. POWDERMAN.  :D  :D  :-D  :-D  :)  :)

Some stores sell strike-anywhere fireplace matches.  These are about 6 inches long so you won't burn your fingers.  They usually come in a can.

I just picked up a pack of the diamond , strike anywhere matches couple weeks ago. They came 3 boxes to the pack 250 per box. I got them at Raleys foodstore. Bel-air and another here in commiefornia are part of a chain. I think Vons in the midwest is also part of their operation. Dont remember what I paid for them, but on my next trip to Raleys gonna see ifin they got anymore and pick up a couple of packs. As for the propane torches I see them for up to $4.98 ea, stopped at the dollar store  and got the same brand for $1.00 ea, picked up 4 or 5 of them. There great for the motor home or starting a campfire. Also keep one with my propane lead melting stove.

Store them in a waterproof container with 1/2 facing each way. In case they accidentally light, you still have 1/2 of them....
