6.5 TCU velocity in a carbine barrel
« on: October 02, 2009, 04:23:12 PM »
What velocity should I expect from 6.5 TCU in a 22-23" barrel with 100gr and 120gr bullets? Also, will a 22-23" barrel realize the full velocity potential of the 6.5 TCU? Hoping for a potent varmint and deer round out to 150 yards or so. Now I have to decide if I want a tapered barrel or a bull barrel. Thanks.

I can't tell you about the 6.5, but I shoot both 14" and 18" 6mm TCU and there's about 200+/- fps difference.  I would think that length barrel would put the 6.5TCU close to 6.5JDJ pistol velocities and I can tell you that it works very good on deer to 150 yd. and further.

Can't find any "rifle" data for the 6.5 TCU, but based on the tables I have, then guestimating for the extra barrel length, you should get 2200 - 2500 for the 120 grain and 100 grain - respectively.

Should be a potent little cartridge out to 200 yards.  Very efficient!  You might consider purchasing a chronograph if you just dieing to know, they're pretty cheap at about $80.00 or so.  If you do, report back to us and let us know how it turns out.

Sierra lists 2300 fps for the 100 and 2100 fps for the 120 in 14" barrels.  Adding another 10" should give an additional 250-300 fps for each bullet, based upon .223 velocity differences in long and short barrels.  Like others said, equivalent to a 6.5 JDJ - not faint praise....

Handgun hunting mag.com  has an article on the 6.5 in a 21" barrel.  Cant remembee the exact URL but it was real interesting, but it had really long throat even 140gr bullets wouldnt reach rifling, dont remember the velocities.
