.310" in .308"?
« on: October 03, 2009, 10:59:27 PM »
Hello everyone,
Can I use .310" bullets in a .308" bore? If it makes any difference, it would be a Barnes bullet in a 30-06.
 Here's the info:
Dia. Weight Description S.D. B.C. Cat #
  .310" 108 gr  RRLP FB  .161 .243 31010

Thanks, Dinny

Its not advisable. You can, but why would you want to?  There are a number of 110gr bullets avalible for the 30cal.  I would not do it. Stick around for a while, go buy the correct bullets.  ;D

CW,
I am looking for something highly frangible and lightweight.  Maybe it's best just to stick to the 110gr V-Maxes then. I would like to stick around for a while yet. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

"Can I use .310" bullets in a .308" bore? "

It's highly unlikely to cause any problem.  Or Barnses wouldn't make them, surely knowing they will be used in .308 bores! (Few of us load for the .310 Martini Cadet anymore!)  Being light means it's short so it will get a good running start before hitting the lands and then, after traveling its own length, it will be bore size.

The only potential for a problem would be IF the loaded round is large enough to pinch the bullet in the neck and not release it when fired.  Since most factory chambers are plenty large and most case necks are fairly thin, that's not likely to happen.  Only way to know is to check it.  Load a dummy round, fully "paint" the neck with a felt tip marker and then chamber it.  Pull it out and check the neck paint rub.  Unles you see a complete circular wipe off around the neck there is some clearance you will be okay.  If there IS a full circle wipe, don't do it.

Actually the bullet is intended for the 7.62x39.  They suggested it when I asked about lightweight varmint bullets for my 30-06.  Nevertheless, I will try your suggestions, if nothing else, to see.

Whan you say " They " I assume that you mean Barnes , If they have no problem with it , I don't see were it will be an issue , they must feel that there will be enough free-bore from the short bullet to offset any increase in pressures .

Lead bullets are often over-sized for the bore that they are used in ans swedging down .002 is not that much for a soft bullet - HOWEVER - make sure to start low and work up .  ;)

Most Ruger mini 30s are 7.62x39 with .308 bores and people have been shooting .310 bullets down them for years, Most don't even know it.

After researching the subject it's my understanding that only the very first run of mini30's were made with with .308 bores. Rumor has it in order to unload parts for the failed xgi rifle program.
