Early retirements in your area?
« on: October 05, 2009, 04:16:08 AM »
A couple of my buddies decided it was just not worth staying in the job market so they took early retirement. Do you know anybody who has done the same?

I mean semi-voluntarily. They couldn't find jobs and decided to just get out of the market. They would have taken jobs if they could find them.

I don't know of anyone doing it voluntarily.  Several here where I work when the budget problems hit due to the recession were basically told that they needed to retire or they'd be let go.

If I can help it I'm planning on working past my retirement from this job anyways.  I started here pretty young and am scheduled to be retiring at age 51, which (hopefully) gives me way too much time past that age to be living on a retirement check alone.  Assuming gas prices and government regulations haven't destroyed the private aviation industry by then I'm hoping to finish out my days as a part time flight instructor :).

Hi
I was offered early retirement 1year before I was 65.
They also offered 400.00 a month extra on top of my retirement for the rest of my life if I accepted.  I accepted. That was eleven years ago.
I never regretted it.

Retired this year at 50, with 30 years law enforcement.  Could have stayed till 58, but figured why?  When I got into this field, retirement at a relativly young age was one of the things that was attractive to me.  Figure at least 10 or so good years to enjoy hunting and travel before all the old aches and pains start.  I see to many guys work until their 65, then retire and die.  No matter what age though, you have to keep active.  If you just sit around, you will just go nuts.

2 suicides of people I know in the last 4 months.
One an unemployed carpenter- could be alcohol related
One a small business owner that was in financial trouble- had school age children.
Were there other issues? Could be, but I believe the economic situation had at least something to do with it

I work for a large financial institution. I'm turning 66. I've tried everything to get layed off so I could collect my 8 months of severance with benifits, social security, pension and unemployment. Nothing seems to work. I filled out a survey and blasted the company-no luck. I stare out the window-no luck. I tell jokes at serious meetings-no luck. Everyone but me seems to get layed off. It's very depressing.

I retired at age 50 and a half I guess ya could say. It's now been 14 years and a few days since I walked out and never looked back. Retirement sure beats working for a living even if money is tight all the time.

Reminds me of "Office Space" (great movie if you guys haven't seen it).  The main character gets hypnotized into just not caring about his job.  Starts not showing up, coming in whatever time he feels like, and just speaking his mind on all the stupid stuff wrong with the company.  He gets promoted while his coworkers working their butts off get laid off :).

You just touched a nerve. Anybody who has ever worked in an office, particularly in computer programming, MUST watch office space. It's so funny. It's about one job that is a composite of many of the organizational quirks I've seen over the years. The boss in the movie reminds me of actual people I have known.

I retired at the age of 55.  Like GB walked out and never looked back.  Have been enjoying it ever since.  Gives me lots of time to hunt and enjoy the outdoors.  Have always been a loner, did everything by my self.  So the fact I am alone most of the time is not a big issue to me, but sometimes would like to share my fun with others.

The drawbacks, all my friends are still working.  The wife refuses to retire, she is only 53 now.  Also claims she would have to stay home with me.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I retired at 58, after working 40yrs.The last 25 of those on a night shift. It got to a point where it was getting just to painfull to do all the climbing  and bull work required at my job.I'll be 61 this Dec. Just 1 more year till I can get SS.That, added to my pension  will make things a bit easier.I hope.

Wanted to pull the plug when 55 but just could not do it financially and had to wait until 59. Those 4 years I regret to this day

Went out on full disability at 57.  Had private disability policy and SS benefits.  Kept retiree health benefits and TriCare for life from military reserve retirement.  At age 60 I got my CG Reserve pension (27 yrs - went out at 0-4).  Wife retired from eduction at 55 with full benefits and 30 years of service.  Wife now has a small consulting job and travels about three months out of the year.  Kids are out of college and on their own (almost).

We do as well in retirement as when we worked.  We now live at the coast.  Haven't had to turn on our SS retirement benefits yet and I have not started the pension from my last job.  We are still able to max our IRAs each year.  Life is good.  Advice:  Save early and save often.  Don't know what I would have done without the disability insurance.  Glad I purchased it.

Today I spent the morning making a chain of paper clips about 25 yards long. The boss said it was interesting. At a meeting, they asked me to come up with something innovative for a certain project, Told them if I had a great idea I'd take it to another bank and sell it. Hunting season is approaching and I'm running out of ideas to get layed off. You think this is a joke it isn't. This is the stangest placed I ever worked.

Well Marty-
You might have to resort to the old standby- get loaded at the company christmas party and tell the ceo's wife that your wife sold the dress she is wearing at a garage sale. If that doesn't work you might as well start embezzling as much as you can get because you are obviously worth much more than they are paying you!
