Burger King is doing a Hardees
« on: October 07, 2009, 06:09:48 AM »
I've noticed my local Burger Kings going out of business gradually over the years. I assumed that the times had left them behind and that people were losing interest. I have seen them adding menu items like Hardees did before they needed their big re-think. The new burger kings look like they are going to be like chipotle grill.

I'm a bit more optimisitic. I think the burger business is in a transition period, and we're watching it happen. Peoples' tastes have changed and they need to keep up. Hardees is very much a "sit down" restaurant now, except that the wait staff just brings the food rather than taking an order then bringing the food.

My biggest problem with these chains is that I generally don't recognize their wares as food. My kids want nothing to do with these places. I think the sales are falling off because of this generational trend.

Meanwhile, Subway expands to fill the known universe. It's my favorite fast food place, almost to the degree that I won't even consider other chains.

Subway is the only fast food place we go to here in the Fairbanks area.  6" Veggie Delight on toasted Flat Bread.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I agree with SD, Subway's is great, but I still need a Whopper (or Double Whopper) every now and them to survive. ::)

Sourdough:

If you like that, you might also like falafel or hummus sandwiches. We make them at home, using a tortilla as the bread. Pretty tasty.

I'm a bog fan (no pun intended) of the "ANGRY" whopper.

I love a good hamburger and a Double Whopper with Cheese is very tasty indeed. I hope they do not change that but maybe offer something else if they want. However COKE learned a lesson when they listened to the new breed on their staff about having to jazz things up. They lost millions changeing something that need no change.

They don't need a makeover, they just need to go back to flame-broiling burgers like they used to, instead of microwaving frozen precooked hunks of soy mush. Odd how no one in management noticed the drop in sales when they made the change!? I used to eat a double whopper with cheese at least once a week, now I can't even choke down a whole whopper jr.

The problem I have with the two local BK'S is that they can never get the order correct. If you go thru the drive thru it is a sure bet that the order will not be what you wanted.

Subs are indeed good, but Subway's success astonishes me.  It's about the worst sub shop I've ever been to.  Now, that's not knocking them TOO bad - their sandwiches are generally tasty, but that's basically because you just can't screw up a sub too much :). Still though, by comparison Firehouse, Larry's, Jersey Mike's, Quizno's, etc all have better subs IMHO.  Some of them just want to charge too much for them though.  That said, the local Subway's have all raised their prices lately too, so it's evening out.

Back to burgers.  I'll agree on the shifting of the mindset.  I'm a young-ish person (28), and when thinking of fast food burger joints I visit them literally about 4-5 times per year tops (and I actually eat out almost every meal - I'm single and don't cook much :)).   Part of it is that I only want a burger but so often, but the other part is that when I DO want a burger, those places make a poor product.  Burgers are not conducive to being cooked fast, nor are they stored well.  If I WANT a burger, than a bar and grill will cook up a heck of a nice one for only about 25% to 30% more money.  You'll just have to sit down and wait on it.

If I'm in a hurry, I'm more likely to eat things that CAN be made fast, or store well:

cold-cut sandwiches - not only subs but general deli's are becoming more and more popular lately
tacos - usually the meat on these can be kept simmering in a crock-pot for hours and end and is still great
sushi - fresh out the case and made immediately
chicken fingers (or fried chicken sandwiches - basically chicken other than large fried traditional cuts) - drop em' in the fryer and let em go for a few minutes and they're great.

The sandwich thing I think is the main thing.  Around here, we've had the same burger joints since I was a kid: BK, McD's, Hardees, Wendys.  While I was growing up Sonics came to town, and lately Jack in the Box has been coming closer (there were some around the college town that I was at for school, but back home there are none yet).  So 1 more place open here in that time.

Compare to the rise in sandwich shops that I've seen spring up, all since being a kid.  When I was a kid there was ONE place in town: Substation II.  Since then I've seen spring up close to here: Subway, Blimpie's, Quiznos, Jersey Mike's, Zero's, Schlotskys, Firehouse, Larry's Giant Subs, McAllister's, and Jason's Deli.

That market is just growing faster.

And I'm still trying to place Arby's somewhere in this mix.  They're not a burger joint for sure, but they have a different feel from most deli's.  IE, most of their stuff still comes with french fries and they have milkshakes and such like a burger joint.  I think they're kind of a transitional entity between the two :).

I believe the success of Subway is that they are available. I used to have good sub shops when I was a youth in the city I lived in. They were generally family run and they were common. Subway opened a store there and I tried it and thought it was horrible by comparison. But where I live now doesn't have the family sub shops, but there are Subways. So that's what I get when I want to go out for a sandwich.

The other places available to me are:
Quiznos, which can be good depending on what I order. Subway is better in some respects.
Jimmy Johns, which I don't go to because the people are generally surly and they don't ask me what I want on the sandwich, and the sandwiches are too big and too expensive.
Potbelly, which is expensive and noisy and the food is not very good.

I can eat a Subway sub but I'd REALL RATHER NOT. I'll take a burger or pizza ten to one over them most any day. A properly made burger is getting harder to find but is as good as it gets for me.

When working in Huntsville, AL for the Army Audit Agency many long years ago back in '73 I believe it was we'd often eat a a Burger King that was the absolute ultimate in efficiency. I've never yet seen a fast food place run as well. Now that had a LOT of business which helped but not many could have handled a quarter of the business they did.

When you walked in the line most often stretched out the door aways and then wound around inside the store. When you got to the counter which you did amazingly fast you placed your order. It was both keyed into a computer and called to the folks in back cooking via speaker. The ticket was printed and pushed to the next station at the counter. They took your money at station two and shoved the ticket to station three who handed your food to you and believe me when you got to station three so had your food. From placing the order to having the food in hand was seldom 30 seconds. It was absolutely amazing how that restaurant was run. It was the model of efficiency that I've never seen even close to being matched.
