Living in a "Nanny state"...
« on: October 07, 2009, 06:49:16 AM »
Fellow NYers...liberal logic chokes us again..
I wanted to get some of those caps for a cap gun that are set up like a speed loader for a revolver..since I had to drive way up into the suburbs, I figured I'd check with one of the "big box" stores..  Asked for "Cap guns & caps"..

  1) First stop a "Target" store ..Guy there says "Noooo..no such thing as guns or anything related"..So I replied; "that's right, this is a French run outfit, isn't it". I figured French to be the answer.

  2) I thought, "toy guns, go where the toys are!"..stop at nearby "Toys R Us" or similar store, "nope, never have handled guns".

  3) Next; "Family Dollar"...."Nope, we were told a while ago to take all toy guns off the shelf or face a fine"..so they took everything toy gun and toy gun related off the shelves.

(Now this piqued my curiosity..I think I smell a snake...)

  4) Walmart.."No..don't carry them (caps or guns), don't know why".

...Smartened up and decided to just ask for the caps.....

  5) Final stop; "Dollar General"....."You mean the caps in the little plastic circles?" I nodded "Well, I think I can help you", he walks over 2 aisles.."Yup, here's some, but don't ask for any toy guns"..

This astute man told me that  Gov Patterson & the attorney general decided to "outlaw" any toy gun sales in NY State.  Still, I looked around and saw all kinds of gruesome toy weapons ..toy swords, toy axes, toy knives, ugly claws & teeth and the usual gruesome halloween  goods.

Now, here's where the brilliance of "liberal logic" comes in:

In all these stores, I saw all kinds of toy cars & trucks, some of them had Hotwheels & Matchbox toy vehicles by the thousands.
In 2008, there were about 25,000 gun related deaths in the US, over half suicide (which they could have accomplished in many other ways), and 2-3% intentional deaths by police guns.
The same year there were 37, 313 highway traffic deaths...why were the toy vehicles not pulled from the shelves ?  Guess we would need liberal logic to answer that one...

Were you aware that NY was this wimpy and dictatorial ?

I have no clue that such a thing was going on...I only look for the real thing when shopping for guns.  I guess I will have to order any toy guns off of the internet for my son...What a shame.  We all had them when we were growing up and we didn't end up killing anyone...Heck, we even rode our bicycles without a helmet (shudder).

Whitetailer:  speaking of not wearing helmets when you were a kid riding your bike (must have been as much fun as it was for me), I have a serious question regarding DOT qualifications or specifications for bicycle and motorcycle helmets::::

questions:  are these helmets, the bicycle helmets supposed to be rated for any particular speed; that is, must they be rated for impact safety to 10, 12, 20 miles per hour???  Is this a federal DOT rating and requirement?  Do you know?

Are motorcycle helmets speed rated any differently???  I see motorcycle riders with the fully enclosed helmets - the ones you can't see from unless you turn your head past 90 degrees and the ones you cannot hear your wife or girlfriend through unless you are plugged into a commo system; and I also see those that appear like a WWII German war helmet.  I do not feel the enclosed helmets are realy all that safe if you can't adequately see or hear and they are fairly heavy so that if you rear-end or head on something fast enough they will snap your neck before they come off your head.  On the other hand those that look like WWII helmets aren't all that 'protective', either.  But are any of these DOT required helmets rated for a higher speed impact than a bicycle helmet, if you know.  Thanks.

Bike helmets are designed to absorb shock and aren't required to pass puncture test.  DOT motorcycle helmets have a puncture standard.  The extra weight of a motorcycle helmet makes it more likely to injure your neck.  I hate full coverage helmets.  I wear a 1/2 shell DOT helmet like most cops wear.  The styrofoam is what protects your brain.  I always wear my bicycle helmet too when on my bicycle.  Adults aren't required to wear helmets in FL.  Kids have to wear them.

Same here in the "State of insanity"..kids to 14 must wear a helmet while riding a bicycle, adults not required. Motorcyclists are required to use a helmet. I always figured those cop style helmets with the leather chin harness with ear holes seemed most practical, but then ...the only bike I ride is a Schwinn. :D

kitch;
That's news to me also. I could possibly see limiting certain powerful models to 16+ or something. Are all slingshots outlawed or certain ones? Is there any restraint for adults buying any type slingshot they want?

My new pellet rifle came home by way of UPS today. The UPS man said air guns are something that must be "signed for" and the signer must beo 21 or older....
Now I wonder if it is "Nanny State" or more appropriately, the "State of Insanity"...
