ladder sights for HR rifle?
« on: October 08, 2009, 02:24:58 AM »
Is there a latter style sight that can be used on the HR BC rifle? I would prefer one that would mount in replacement of the scope rail?

thanks guys!

Smith makes one that mounts on the barrel.... try Track of the Wolf or Buffalo Arms to find one.

1892 30-40 Krag. Requires slight grinding on the base. Check Ebay, mine was under $20.

I have a Smith Ladder on one of my BCs.  Works Great, but if I remember right it was over $200.  Mike

The 30-40 Krag also adds to the "old timie" look of of the BC, especially if you refinsh the stock with Danish oil.....

I have a reproduction ladder sight from a Sharps replica (IIRC) on one of my 45-70's and it looks great on the gun. I have not shot it yet though....<><....:)

The Smith sight is shown in the FAQs, their website hasn't been updated in years, they deal mostly in tactical stuff.

Smith Enterprises sell only to dealers, Brownell, Midway, etc.
They are not making the sights at this time, that I know of. There production for the last several years has been doing M-14 rebuilds for the Dept. of the Navy, Marine Corp. This contract has keep them very busy.
I bought a Ladder sight from Ron at the shop two years ago. He had a used prototype in his tool box. I need one for my Winchester Legacy 26 octagon barrel 30-30.
Last year I found one for my Sons Marlin 1895 45-70. It was a Handi-Rifle type with the base that fits the rear sight base holes. This base has the dove-tail for the standard 3/8" Ladder sight. I bought the sight from a fellow that helped Ron Smith do the protype for the Handi. All I wanted was the sight and he kept the handi base. This sight has a aperature hole in the Ladder slider. My Winchester Ladder slide has a V notch.
I hope Smith starts producing the sights again, they are a quality product.

Brownell's has the Smith sight in stock, and as I said before it's in the FAQs, there are links with pics of it on a BC and some long range shooting details by dodd3. Be aware that it has no windage adjustment other than moving it in the dovetail base. Smith put V-notch sliders on a bunch of them in error, mine came with one instead of the peep slider, took me several months and several phone calls and emails to get the correct one from them.  :-\

Montana Vintage Arms have a very interesting looking rear sight , their Rough and Ready  rear sight. I was thinking about puting one on a 357 max barrel
Take care, be good and do good things

Bubajunk Thats kinda my plan. Ive got a 22 inch 45/70 in BC stock. Ive got a second BC set in the mail. Its going on my 17 inch Max Both are gonna have peep sights, Matching set for me & my boy 'hes 2 y/o so his sisters are gonna use it till hes ready. But Ive been thinking hard about some ladder rear sights. Just wondering how it would look & work on those short barrels

if you are going to use the rough & ready sight you will need to mill the top of the max barrel as they are made for an octagonal barrel flat.
