Negative here on the 1%. I associate lightly with a few of the patched at rallies.

I grew up right near Richmond California.  Long time ago before the Angels started to play out there, there was a group called the Richmond Riders.  Angels started when the Man from San Berdoo showed up in colors.  That was the first time I heard of 1% ers.  What is the current definition?

Same here. I knew a few guys that have been in clubs (outlaws, vietnam vets, dc eagles) but I only knew one guy that was patched that I would actually call a close freind. He's gone now too, left behind a wife and three year old son.

One guy that I used to work with quit the dc eagles. The next night there were people trying to steal his bike. Guys that he rode with too. Either you were in or you were out.

Those were the 1%ers and I got no use for people like that or that kind of life.

I met John Tracy in 1965 over at a friends house.  Big ugly biker but seemed to be more intrested in fun than anything else.  I was over at Cliff's to ask what sevice in the Navy was like as I had just passed my physical.  In 1969 with 3 yrs Army done I was out at Oakland Colieseium custom bike show and saw him again just as big but a lot more hair.  He had walked up to a bike, took out this 3-4" crescent and was removing a part.  He polished it up and put it back in place.  There was a guy there with about a 10 year old son and the kid was enraptured with the bike and biker.  Kid said something like Wow thats the greatest thing I've ever seen.  Tracy's reply I will never forget.  "Kid it's got to be, because it's the only thing in life I've got.  And it's not all that much, I'm just a one percenter"  He was looking at the father more than the son when he said it.  The kids father's look was all gratitude over how the biker had helped him set up a chance to talk with his son.  John looked past them and saw me, gave a wave and came over.  Glad to see you made it back, heard you went Army, he said, the he left.  Less than  year later John Terence Tracy was dead.  Terry The Tramp down in San Ber Doo.  I don't think he was a true one percenter, just a man wanting to keep stretching what fun was.

Going to the Sparks America Halloween Bash next weekend and will rub shoulders with a few patches there. Mostly the local crew I run with will be around.

Well, actually he just said he knew a few men who had been in clubs.  Didn't say anything about the clubs being 1%'er.  He only said that of those (patched members) he knew only one patched member was a close friend.

Remember, I asked the OP why he wanted to know.  Unless you are in an MC, you don't need to worry about who's a 1%'er.  If you're in an MC, you'll know.

But what do I know...

I know and hang with VVMC members and I have yet to a see a 1% patch on one. This was another of those questions that should not have been. It brings out the ignorant and provokes the informed. This is like watching sharks on the Discovery channel. It's a lot different if your are swimming in the same water with them.

I know that the 1% patch exist but does the true one percenter really need to advertise?

Are the ones that wear them wannabe's or are they simply using that patch as a subtle warning that say's (Dont look at me, dont talk to me, and above all, dont even think of taking my picture or one of my bike.) ?

How do you really define a 1%?...I personally know a group (lets say 99% percenters) who had a group of unadvertised, or patchless (regarding the 1% patch) in lodgings above them during bike week. They went the whole week with no trouble but the 99 percenters did cook for this group a couple of evening on the grill (no reimbersment) as well as the loan of their helmets (without permission) a few times. There was no hostility but also no friendship, do ya suppose that this fits the bill?

That group on the upper tier did wear thier colors (a well known, notorious group) while the group on the lower tier had no affiliation with any club.

I was not trying to say anything negative about the vietnam vets or any other club. I just meant I only had one freind that was patched.

Sorry if that is how I came across.

You actually have 1 percenters in all walks of life.

I would advise you not to confront a group or a solo wearing a 1% patch and ask if they or he is a wannabee. These guys play by different rules and fair ain't one of them. They don't forgive ignorance or forget disrespect.   If have to ask you won't understand so tread lightly. Grimjim I understood what you were saying.

Well Understood...I just thought that they really do not need to advertise even if you take away the motorcylces and the jackets. Some would indeed be good to ride the river with but one may watch the overall actions if they would tend to get on the slippery side of the slope.

True, Might be us someday if U.N. troops are in our street and are coming for our guns. Your neighboor may have turned you in and the media will have branded you as a terrorist for not compiling, Can you say how you will really react?

Most people can be delt with but it is up to you on wheather or not to participate in the actions. Was fueling up the car one night in the hood with locals present. I replaced the pump in it's holder and was counting out my cash right there with the Wife (as told to me latter) being scared to death that I was going to get hit in the head for that cash. They Knew Better, I told her. It is hard to explain but I did make eye contact with all present.

I am not a bad a$$ by any means but ones posture, eye contact, and projected demiener can go a long way. Ever wonder why some people can walk through a pack of farm dogs to knock on the door of the house while those same dogs will have others at bay on top of their car?...I always happened to belong to the former group with people being included.

Again, does a 1% really have to advertise? Makes good sense not to try them out (for the ones that do) but on the whole, I think not.

I kinda wish this thread would die, and since I'm posting to it I'm part of the problem, but I've got to say a couple of things.  I'm gonna use some quotes from D-n-H and expound on them a bit.

These guys play by different rules and fair ain't one of them.

The MC world, and I'm talking 3 patch MC's, not riding clubs or groups, is a unique subculture with established traditions and protocols that have evolved over the years.  See the "different rules" quote above.  Part of the reason for the long period a prospective member goes through before, and if, he gets his colors is to learn these aspects of the MC culture.  Hence, you should recognise that you don't understand, and tread lightly around the MC world.

Quote
They don't forgive ignorance or forget disrespect.

This is pure fact.  It is a basic tenant of ALL MC's and is not restricted to whomever you mean when you say 1%'ers.  Matter of fact, for the purpose of this discussion, just forget that term.  There may be a heirarchy, but for most non-MC members, an MC is an MC, period.  And while it's true that some clubs may be more forgiving then others, if you, through ignorance, act disrespectfully, you run the risk of become educated.

So, how to avoid this.  Show respect by leaving MC's alone.  Just because you ride a bike doesn't mean you are a club member's brother.  His brothers are those that fly the same colors as he does, not you.  Just leave them alone!  Believe me, it will not hurt their feelings.

So you see, It makes no difference if there are any "1%'ers" here or not, and if there were, they certainly wouldn't be "lurking."  The very title of this thread could be considered disrespectful.  As was said, this question should never have been asked and the OP has never answered my question when I asked why he wanted to know.

One bad man in a suit and tie or six bikers beating your ass with a hammer don't matter you are still fubar'd in the end. If you are saying I'm getting my info from a lame ass generic tv show then you are wrong. Ride a mile or two and you will learn these things on your own.  Act a fool around these guys and you get the crash course.

Well said,Here is a little more info on   that you should not use MC`s names. Most are copyrighted.Use of the name or showing the patch without permission is grounds for a lawsuit,at the least!!!!MC`s are very political. Most States have a COC`s which say who and when Colors can be worn. Most MC`s are operated for a profit.Dont mess with thier money.I am trying to save you guys a lot of hassle. This whole thread should dissappear.
