Pennsylvania Bear

I got some second hand info from a very reliable source that Gary Alt said that the PA Game Commision has a radio collar on a bear here that wieghs in at close to 1,100 lbs. Dr. Gary Alt runs the deer program in PA but for many years prior to this he ran the bear program.

Anyone else here this info direct from Gary or the game commish ?

It's true.
I'm in Luzurne county and this is the area they supposedly had tagged it.
There was a bear around my house that same year that weight if not then over 900 pounds.     This frigging bear was a mammoth!!!!!!!!
I remember waking up to my moms scream early that morning as she went for a sip of water from the kitchen.  As soon as she looked out the window she just let out!!!! Everyone in the house rushed to the kitchen  And there it was, sitting there with a 40 pound bag of sunflower seeds that we feed the squirrels with.  It didn't even touch the garbage that we had put out that night.
Just ate the seeds until the bag was half empty, slowly rose to its feet, and just walked off like nothing happened.  There were paw marks in the dirt that were bigger than my head!!!!
This was a good 5 years ago and ever since we haven't seen it.  I have a good feeling that this was the bear they tagged.
I know it wasn't shot anywhere here, otherwise everyone would know. It would have been darn close to a PA record if not broken.

Hate to tell you this, but I read that Gary Alt and the Pennsylvania Game Commission parted company earlier this year.  That's a GREAT loss for those of us, the hunters and sportsmen, who feel that Gary Alt is the ultimate choice for the position he held.

I hunt out of my hunting buddy's cozy cabin in the Moshannon State Forest in north-central Pennsylvania, between DuBois and Clearfield, just north of I-80... and Alt's decision to require "shootable" bucks to have at least 3 points on one side of his antlers should start to bear fruit this year.  Unfortunately, Gary won't be around to see his "pet project" start to "work".

Hopefully, the Penn. Game Commission will be wise enough to leave Alt's programs in place so that they CAN work... and we might see some bucks with more than a "spike" or two small points per side.

:D   hi Ron T,
I'm happy to let you know that Gary Alt is NOT gone from the PA game comm.Rumors spread rapidly, but having heard this back in June I called the game comm. and was told that he has not left nor will he leave. There was something about his pension that was causing a bit of a tizzy but it has been worked out and Mr Alt will be here in pa for awhile.Hope you see some good results from his new buck laws this year.I have seen alot more decent bucks so far and am hoping for the best!!
Remember one thing though, the deer herd in Pa will be smaller in the future. The game commission has declared war on doe,and plans are in the making for MORE liberal doe hunting seasons.Gary claims that the deer herd in Pa has gone unattended for so long that the forests are overbrowsed and some native trees and habitat are being lost to hungry deer. There is also alot of pressure from some lumber companys and insurance companys etc to shrink the deer herd.
I think the bucks in Pa will be bigger, but deer will not be as plentifull as we are used to.Less doe=less deer.Good luck this season!! PARR

Pa-ridge runner, PA game commision says there are plenty of bears here that have more than enough potential of becoming a world record.  It's just the matter of finding them in three days
