Powder for 204?
« on: October 08, 2009, 01:49:05 PM »
I know that each rifle is different, but a lot of calibers, seem to like certain powders. The 22-250 and H380 being an example. Is there a powder that works well for the 204. I am hoping I can duplicate the 32 gr. Winchester load for a friend, as his CZ527 likes that load. Thanks for any help, Don

I have good results using H322. I have used it in loading for a Contender and a NEF. The Contender would do less than half inch. The NEF not quite so good 1 inch so far needs some work.I use h322 more than anything else.

Pick up a reloading manual and look for the loads that comes closest to filling the case. Not always the best, but usually close. There are alot of powders that work well in the .204, you should not have any trouble finding 1 that works well.

I've real good luck with IMR 4064 in my Handi.  It will shoot 5 shots under a dime @ 100yrds.

I don't shoot the 204 , but have a few friends that do and they all say that Varget is their powder of choice , may explain why they keep calling me to see if I have any extra to spare .  ;D

RL-10X and benchmark will be your friend. I find them to be the most accurate with the greatest velocity with both light and heavy bullets. RL-10X is a bit dirty but has the edge on velocity and accuracy. I have also used H-322 for 32 gr's, H-4895 for 39 & 40 gr's, and H-4198 and RL-7 for the varmint grenades.
I do have a bunch of 38gr wildcat test loads with TAC ex-terminator. Hoping these work well as this powder meters like water and burns fairly clean.

As you can see, there are several powders that work for the 204 Ruger. While I do not own one, I think I would try Hodgdon's  BL C2 or W 748 first. They should nearly fill the case and meter well, if you throw charges. I have had excellent results with BL C2 in 222 Remingtons.
