Handi-Rifle on T.V. tonight
« on: October 08, 2009, 05:13:35 PM »
I was watching the Mississippi Outdoors show on tv tonight, this was the first show of the new season of shows, they were showing a hunt from last years Primitive Weapon Season, the man in the shooting house was hunting a big green feild next to a large wood line, he was hunting with a NEF handi-rifle in 45-70 cal. with scope, they showed it all thur the hunt, he had does in the green feild and waited untill a nice big 8-point walked into the feild one shot with the handi-rifle at 160 yards and the buck was on the ground, I do not know the man's name but he did a good job with the handi-rifle one shot, it was good to see a handi-rifle on T.V.

Greetings,

I wish Georgia wold adopt such an allowance for primitive weapon season. But until then, I will be shooting the TC Black Diamond in the morning. I am glad to hear of one of those " ugly, boat paddle cowboy guns " doing their thing. Awesome one shot stops are expected when you hunt with a single shot.
Have a great day !

Funny, you don't hear anyone making fun of TC Oncores?

I have the same rifle, 45-70 with a 3x9x40 scope. I sight it in to shoot 3" high at 100 yards with Hornady LE 325 gr. and its deadly and accurate to 200 yards. Every year when we do a sight-in, all the guys with the fancy rifles want to shoot mine too. Go figure.

I hate to be negative, but I have a hard time excepting a single shot 45-70 with a scope as being Primitive. I'm sorry but Primitive is a cloth patched round ball using "Black Powder" ignited by a percussion cap or flint with a side hammer and  open sights.

There are both.
While some rounds will hit at 100 yards but not carry energy for deer to that range.

What is primitive is a relative question.  Maybe primitive hunts should only allow spears or atlatls.  Even today's bows are the products of amazing technology.

Yea primitive is relative, however primitive seasons were established for those who wanted the challenge of doing it with true muzzleloaders, longbow or recurves. Then those who did not want to put out the extra effort it takes with those weapons cried foul. They wanted to enjoy the late season or longer seasons but did not want the challenge just the season. and now the inline/scope sighted weapons which are as accurate to 200+ yards as any conventional rifle, are being used in primitive seasons, just because its a single shot doesn't make it primitive! I think its wrong! sorry for the soap box and sealing the thread, but when I see these things I have to speak up.

If you read on the MDWFP forum, you'll see the Mississippi traditionalist feel the same way, but it's the law there and the state's responsibility to manage the deer population, beats having to pay someone to cull them, IMO.  ;)

Their is a big insurance lobbying group in Ms., deer related auto collisions are up 38% since yr. 2000. During these primative seasons your not limited to these terrible guns you can hunt with a rock if that is your desire.

aromakr,

I did not mean to be flippant.  I understand completely your desire to have true primitive hunts.  One of the things that draws me to Handi Rifles and to short range cartridges is the desire to make the hunt a bit more challenging.  However, I am not as hard core as others.  One of my good friends does a lot of bow hunting but with no sites, he is a really good shot and does not need them.  What you are up against is the state's desire to control the deer population.  If there were fewer deer, your primitive season would likely have remained that way.

Of course what that might really mean is that there are fewer hunters all together.

Aromakr, I tend to agree with you in as much as I use a .50 cal black powder percusion Pennsylvania long rifle in our muzzleloader season up north. I do the whole bit, hunt from a remote cabin, stay back there till I fill my tag, no electric, no plumbing, candles, and a wood cook stove. Pack in, pack out. Kinda the old fashioned way.
During the regular season, I use my 45-70 Handi. I think that its a relative thing based on where you live and how you feel about it.  Happy hunting, my friend.

I still have my T/C 50 cal.black powder rifle, Knight Inline 50 cal. scoped rifle, and NEF 45/70 and 500 S&W MAG. scoped rifles, if you could pick one to go Primitive Hunting with which one would you pick if had the choice, I liked the ole time blackpowder hunting but now with all the choices here in Mississippi it's hard to go back to a old black powder rifle, this year T/C ENCORES 35 cals and largers are legal primitive rifles, so there you go just pick your rifle, if I go hunting with with my NEF 500 MAG in Primitive Season, it's really not a Primitive Rifle but the state of Miss. said it is, so I will hunt with my Handi-Rifle.

I agree with you in principal aromaker and as a traditional rifle builder, I get annoyed at inlines, smokless powder shooters and scopes, during the BP season. But as long as the Deer herd can support the pressure (from additional people, the guns aren't any deadlier) I could care less what other people use. Now that I said that, I own the land I hunt on and no one else is allowed there. If I hunted public land and had to put up with the unwashed masses, it would be a different story.

Now if you want to get me started on something...talk about Dog Hunters. ;D

In Minnesota, muzzleloader season is after the regular gun season.

You cannot use optics of any type, but in-lines are OK.

You can use scoped muzzleloaders during the gun season instead of a centerfire.

There was a mention on TV the other night, about the deer in one Miss. town, not far from here, that the police are working to change it so the deer can be hunted in town. There are so many deer in town now, that you can not even drive the speed limit.

Oh, and primitive hunts use to be, flint locks, and NO ADJ Sights........... but that has been years ago too.

If I wasn't hunting with my Handi, I'd be hunting with my Remington 700ML.  After years of hunting with flintlocks I just want to hunt with as little effort as possible.  I like to relax and enjoy myself without the 2 hour clean-up when I get home.

I own an original Springfield Trap door model 1878 45-70-405. And I can only hunt with this rifle during The 10 day Kansas regular rifle season because it's breech loader.A muzzle loader in Kansas is just that it has to load from the front everything else is legal Inlines, scopes, shotgun primers, smokeless powder, etc, etc. And the muzzle loaders get first crack at the deer then the stick throwers get nearly three months to hunt. There is no primitive season for a 130 + year old rifle that is side hammered open sighted.

Sorry, to me the whole nay sayers argument of whether something is primitive enough is a bit disingenuous considering just the weapon only. Do they drive to the hunting grounds? Do you use synthetic insulated clothes, rubber & insulated boots, pelletized powder, heck even posting abut primitive ain't really...

Not trying to be a smart hiney but my point is to each their own. I reckon if a person was transported into the future from back in the 1800's and earlier they would readily avail themselves of the conveniences and advances of the present day. If the reg's allow something and someone steps up to take advantage of that law, bully for them. Likewise, for the hardcore individual who hunts in full primitive regalia. Good on you.

Me? I am very pleased to have the improvements. To me hunting is about getting out and about and getting the opportunity to partake of the fruits of the hunt, mainly MEAT. anything that gets me out more is a good thing. I'd be hunting a lot less if always frozen, wet or had equipment I can't reasonably rely on. For me, I revere the past and welcome the present and wonder what the future will bring.

Be safe, keep warm and a Happy New Year to you and yours.

I think the main reason behind Mississippi's allowing more modern rifles during what has previously been, and is still called, the primitive season is to get more people in the woods for longer periods of time.  But herd reduction is also a factor.  This state has a very large number of deer.  As a Mississippi deer hunter myself I had long opposed the new more liberal regulations.  But then I  considered that I myself long ago chose to leave the compound bow and return to the recurve and the long bow during archery season.  And I had continued to hunt with the bow as well during the "muzzle-loader" season, which is what most called it.  That's still the case with me.  I have never bought a rifle to use during primitive season; I still hunt with a bow.  I have even gone to using lever action rifles during regular gun season and, just yesterday, shot a buck with my Marlin 1894 .44 magnum.  Now, I did ask my hunting buddies last year if they thought I could put just one cartridge in my .44 and legally hunt with it during "primitive" season.  It is of a design prior to 1900, has an exposed hammer, and is of at least .35 caliber, all of which are required.  They said they didn't think so, so I just used my bow, and will do so again this year.  As Patty said, to each his own.

The last deer season here is Jan 21 thur Jan 31 2010, Primitive Weapon Season, you can hunt with a bow, flint-lock, cap-lock, in-line with scope, or a breach loading single shot rifle 35 caliber or larger with exposed hammer, so there you go if you live here in Mississippi you have a wide range of hunting with what you what in the Primitive Seasons, so you make your choice and hunt with what you like, I killed two deer this year during the first Primitive Season both with a Handi-Rifle, so be happy we have so many choices and so many deer to hunt.

I believe another reason for the primitive weapon season and for other states considering it is for money.  You have to pay an extra 15 dollars for a primitive weapon license.  Most people did not hunt with a muzzle loader before because of the hassle.  Most everyone that deer hunts in MS now hunts primitive weapon season also.  Also, most 45-70 loads approximate what a modern muzzle loader is capable of.  However,  I don't condone people using a .35 whelen on deer for primitive weapon.  I believe it is completely over-kill.

For the traditionalist.  No one made you stop using your muzzle loader.

I shoot ground hog size steel plates at three hundred yards all the time with my STANDARD BARREL 223 handi. Most of my shots if I do my job watching the wind will hit the steel plate in what would be the G-Hog's vitals area.  And I'm betting that I will be able to acheive 400yd accurate shots with the new bullets that im going to test. My longest shot to date was with my STANDARD BARREL 223 Handi.  A yote at 351yds.  When talking accuracy and not down range energy with handis, most calibers are quite accurate at long ranges when reloading the right ammunition with the proper C.O.L. of the reloaded cartridge.
It's all a hot mess...........
