Herters wads
« on: October 09, 2009, 08:28:22 AM »
I have a most of a large box of plastic Herter's wads that has been around since we started reloading at home when I was a teenager. They are 12 guage and hold 1 1/2 oz of shot. I've looked through all my old manuals and can't find any recipies that use them. I know Dad used to use them but not sure what in.  IIRC they are from the late 60's / early 70's. Anybody here have any experience with them? Load data?

I doubt the plastic in them is close to what it was back then. If they are for 1 1/2 oz. loads I would not use them. When I load that heavy I want to know that that the load is right and will shoot with the cost of shot today.

You mean that the plastic may have deteriorated? I hadn't even thought of that. I still am shooting some Rem power pistons from that era and they seem to do ok, but it is something to consider.

I'm still loading Herters wads, plastic is still pliable.

If you give me an e-mail address, I'll send you Herter's shotshell reloading manual.

If you can get data for them and they seem ok I would definately load a couple and fire them through a cronograph and see what they are doing. If you don`t have a crono just see how they seem to shoot and pattern. If they are good fine, but I would not wait that much shot in a bad wad.

Hey 45 Colt:

I have some Herter's wads and also some Herter shotgun powder left. Is your manual downloadable or in  PDF ? I could use it, too. Thanks,

Thank you,

I must have sent the wrong thing. Have various documents all 'stockpiled' to send out. I'll check again.

OK, I just sent you the complete Herter's shotshell loading manual. I opened the attachment to make sure it was the right document. That's all Herter's put out, there ain't no more.

I recall using the Chalice wad.  If I recall correctly, it's been awhile (about 25 years!), it took a pretty standard 1 1/8 oz load over a pretty standard amount of powder suitable for target rounds. I think I used Green Dot, as that was my only shotgun powder at the time.

I don't think I have any relics of those days left.

You might consider doing a trial loading with a modest amount of powder with a similar burning rate as green dot.  Go to a manual and find a load that will fit your wad and shell with the proper crimp.

I KNOW, I KNOW! Isn't that a bit risky?  Ask for second and third opinions before you try it!

I hesitate to suggest powder loads for others, but I use 16 - 17 grains of either RED or GREEN Dot, and still get my share of claybirds.  It depends on how everything fits into your shell with a proper crimp.  You might have to try several hulls before you find the right fit.  If the column is too low, the solution is to drop one or more dried beans into the shot to bulk it up.  If too high, try a different hull or drop the shot load a bit, assuming you went modest on the powder.
