They have been pretty rare for the last 50 years since their main food sources, the jackelope and fur bearing trout have become almost extinct.  ;)

My grandma sure believed in them.  She also thought black racers & "devil's horses" were posion.

:) Years ago, people who traveled by covered wagons would dread camping at the bottom of a hill due to the large number of hoop snakes in Texas.  The hoop snakes would roll down the hill into camp sites and scare the women. The Texas Hoop Snake's scientific name is Crotalus hula hoopus.  Back then travelers could hardly wait to get to that ocean front property in Arizona.  Take care!  Always, Gene

The hoop snake originated out of the Pecos Bill stories. The gent who roped tornadoes and road them. It is believed the hoop snake is named after the mud snake; a water snake that basks in an open coil. The hoop snake had a stinger on his tail that could kill a cottonwood tree in a matter of seconds, but no match for ol' Pecos. The only way to defeat it was to jump through the hoop and chop the stinger off with a bowie knife. ;)
