Western Bullet Co
« on: October 09, 2009, 08:42:12 AM »
I placed a small order with the Western Bullet Co thru Pay Pal and they took my money as expected. ;)
However two attempts to call the Co at their listed Phone # during business hours  went unaswered. Now being a guy that expects the worst and is happy to be wrong the question is: Did anybody recently deal with this place?? :-\

I've dealt with them several times and the last time I dealt with them...well, let's just say I'm searching for another source.

You'll find that they (actually, he...I think his name is John) has excellent products and good prices but getting a hold of him or getting your order out in a reasonable time is pretty tough.  Nonetheless, your order will arrive at some time or another...maybe the next season.  The first time I ordered from him I got a variety of stuff from him in a reasonable amount of time but then the next two times were rather worrisome.  I believe it took two or more months to ever get my last order after two or three verbal promises were made (after making many, many calls to get one) that the order would be out "in a day or two".   Even after all of that, the order was sent wrong as I received and paid for the wrong bullets.  Believe me, I didn't want to go through the hassle of getting the right ones sent to me so I just had to "eat them" so to speak.  So much for a good deal on bullets.

So, if you want good bullets at a good price and you live near Western Bullet Co, I'd say stop by and buy from him where you can deal with him in person.  If you want to get good bullets at a good price and worry a lot, get frustrated, get some of the wrong bullets from what you ordered and worse, order your bullets on line or call them in to Western Bullet Co.

 Thanks Blackhawker.
Just what I wanted to read( not!!) I don't live anywhere near that place, good thing it was a small order and I am not in a rush.
He appears to be the only one that has those Collar Button bullets for the 45-70 which I want to try for fun shooting.

I've ordered lots of bullets from John, even some special orders, always got them, sometimes it's hard to get a hold of him tho by phone, he always answered my emails tho, maybe not right away tho. But it's been a year since I last ordered, things change, specially in this economy.  :-\ I've had the same experience with Beartooth Bullets, always got em....sometimes 6 months later tho, never that long from Western. If you cast, NEI makes the CB mold, but Western is the only source I know of for the bullet, hard to beat his prices too.

Yes, I saw the NEI mold posts and went to their site. Before shelling out 90 bucks plus I want to try a similar looking bullet.

Tim, (and BBF)
OK, maybe I was a little harsh in my last post.  Truthfully, John's bullets are great; a good quality product at an excellent price.  They're even nicely packaged to boot! As I said, the first order I placed with John (would have been late 2007) showed up within a week or two.  All items were there and in good condition.  I was impressed!  I even talked to John several times on the phone before and after the order and he was both available and very helpful.

Unfortunately, last year I placed an order and it took months.  Top that off, he never answered his phone.  Once he did answer, he told me the order was going out the next day.  After two or three more weeks, I finally managed to get a hold of him and he told me the same thing.  Finally, my order arrived and I was happy and satisfied.  However, something was different about a 410 grain bullet for the 45-70.  It was wider at the ogive and I couldn't chamber it in my BC.  I tried to call him but once again, never got a hold of him.  After a year of not knowing what to do with the bullets, I decided to seat them deeply and load them in my T/C pistol.  They ended up working great!

As if I hadn't had enough punishment, I placed a third order.  I placed this order on line as instructed by John in a previous phone call.  I placed the order and never got an order after roughly three or four weeks.  At that point, John's website was no longer working.  I thought that he closed shop and I was out of luck.  I began searching the internet for Western Bullet Company articles and found several people who had posted complaints about sending money but never receiving their order after months and months.  I began to worry but after a few more weeks, I finally got a hold of John.  My order showed up a day or two later, however, I received two boxes of bullets in my order that were incorrect.  After all of the hassles I'd been through, I thought it was better to sell them on this site or GunBroker rather than try to call John at Western.

Summary:
I still want to give John and Western another chance.  I know, you're thinking..."this guy is crazy!"  Although John had a tough time getting my order out to me on the second order, I believe that the third order may have come late because it seemed that John was setting up a new web site.  I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt here.  John seems to be too nice of a guy on the phone and his product is a high quality product and shipped neatly, not as a mess as if shipped by someone who doesn't care.  Also, I believe that John does his own casting and he may be working on his own.  With prices at what he posts, he probably has LOTS of orders to fill and it's gotta be pretty overwhelming for one guy to cast huge volumes of bullets.  I think the recent price increase in lead and copper may have put John a little over his head in orders in the past two years.  Once things settle a little, I'll probably place another order with Western and see if things are better.

BBF, you'll get your bullets eventually if you haven't received them yet.  When they arrive, you'll like what you ordered and be happy with how they print out on your targets.

No matter how good a product is once in hand it does not and cannot make up for the kind of lack of concern for the customer these posts indicate exist with this company. Now taking a along time in and of itself isn't a problem IF you are made aware up front it will take that long. But once a promise is made for a delivery that promise needs to be kept or pretty darn closely at least. Then getting the order wrong when it is next to impossible to contact anyone there to straighten it out would be for me the final straw. I personally do not do business with such outfits again no matter how good the product is.

Have dealt with John twice now. Both times it took a while to get my 357 bullets but they are high quality and I will be ordering from him again. Fact is, on the first order it took longer than even he thought it should and he sent me an extra 100 free. His 160gr SWCGC and 170gr Keith style SWC's are great bullets.

Greybeard,
What you're saying is absolutely correct.  The thing that really got me bent about my orders was the fact that I was told that they were going out tomorrow and that I'd have them in a few days when in reality, he either lied or just didn't keep his promise due to lack of organizational skills on his part.  Whatever the case, if he would have just told me it'll be a month, I wouldn't have had as much of a problem with it.

The one and only reason why I still might order from Western is because he offers a bullet that I cannot find anywhere else at a decent price.  I shoot a lot with this particular round and at $14.00 per 100, that's do-able.  Other casters sell the same bullet for $30.00 or more and an order of 500 can be pretty expensive at that price.  However, Lonewolf has put me in touch with a caster that makes a similar bullet at a similar price.  I'm gonna give him a try first and if all works well, then WBC is history for me.  Believe me, I would have never dealt with them again after my first bad experience if I had another option.
