My first Coehorn went back into the crucible but all the mountain howitzers were good.

The funny color is heat oxidation or reaction with the mould material.  It comes off with elbow grease.

Your mortar looks pretty good to me; I can see a few shallow hollows on the surface, but if no inclusions are found when T&M bore it out, it should be good to go.

 Gary,

If I, having no experience, using materials and equipment I had put together myself, on my 1st pour of a fairly large bronze investment casting, came up with something looking like you've shown, I'd be tickled pink.

Looks pretty good to me.  Sure, it's not perfect, but as Boom J said, if it's usable, once it's cleaned up it could be a very nice first try!

Napoleons are pretty big.  A full size one is about 1100 lbs, I think, and the sprues and shrink feeder and other casting devices would add at least 250 lbs to that.  That is a lot of bronze to melt and even more to pour manually.

You need either a large power hacksaw or a large bandsaw, both with 4 TPI blades, to cut the shrink feeder off the casting.  A manual hack saw is self punishment.

that just means a casting party....... everyone transports their furnace to one location, a hole is dug for the flask, (have a crane on hand for removal)

everyone heats up the metal and is ready to continually pour the moment you start...........   ::)

O.K. finally the computer whiz, Zackary X showed up and made the loading of this video possible.  I told him never to go out of town again.  Yea right, that will work!!

Anyway, Gary told us no more photos of the new born were to be posted, so we decided to show you the sexy part, or How the Newborn came to be!!!  The title of the movie was toned down to meet with all GBO restrictions on content and now has a "G" rated title,
"A Smee is Born".

Gary is once again a proud Papa!

gary

i'll enjoy yours critique ......

just one more thing Tracy .....  , this Zack X ....would that be your son whose is 20 years old and smarter than you are smart at these things ?

eta  ;D as always Dan told me how to do ALL THIS ! its taken nearly 8 months to do . BUT now that most things have been gathered ,got , bought  ,made , and built , the BUILT PART is mostly due to Seacoast Arty's equipment and full help at every turn .

When done polishing Smee you can send it with him for final inspection.....  ::)

The video works best if you right click on it, go to "save target as...", and download it to your computer.  It's ~36MB, so it doesn't stream very well.

Very nice, BTW.  I'm really looking forward to the finished barrel!

I would like to see some better protective gear.  That stuff is really hot, especially if it gets on you.  I know the gear is expensive but it's cheaper than a trip to the ER.

you are right George we should have better and i will get some . i got a whif of flux fumes and you can see that in the film . a resperator ...not a simple filter mask ,although we didnt use those either . they were ready to use ,i had some ......but i spaced them and the arm protection ,which was only going to be a heavy jacket .

i doubt if i'll ever have a foundry suit or two but at least welding gear and arm covering . maybe those green sleeves :D things that welders wear ? we DO NOT look at the intense flame of the burner emits ..UV rays .

but i must say looking at that golden puddle in that cucible is very mezmerizing ....

thanks for the heads up ,next time i'll be sure and have Mike sign a waiver for ALL liability next time !

i'm sure Dan will address the issue privatly ..... :-[

George ,did you guys have any accedents when you were teaching ?
