i traded some airguns with Andy (MSP Ret) for a nef 28 inch mod 12 gauge barrel for this project . before i even got the package i ended up having to move .I picked the barrel up from the old place a day or so after it arrived and cut it the next day and really did not have time to finish it . I had some free time so i dressed the cut the best i could and cleaned up the surface rust and painted it with hi temp paint that i still need to cure ...

the barrel is right at 19 1/2 and I tried a few times to get some sights to epoxy on but they would not stay put . i have tried to find locktite black max but cannot find any . so i may just get big bead installed , but gander mountain wants $30 to do it and i have not had a chance to see what On Target Guns will charge , but it is likely half of what gander wants .

I still need to get a recoil pad but am reluctant to do so as i use this mostly as a .410 for squirrels and do not want to change the fit of the stock . I was thinking of trying to locate a cheap wood but stock that i can add a recoil pad to and possibly do a straight grip conversion on and just swap them out when i swap barrels . any way you probably have had enough of my ramblings so i will post up the pics i have and shut up , for now

looks like a heck of a good start, what was you wantingto use the 12 stub for? slug's or just blasting whatever is in your path ? hhaaahha

thank you , i was intending it for slug gun use but I would really like to get it set up for choke tubes but i can not afford the smith work so i don't really know what i will use it for .

just a couple ideas....brownell's sells some paste-type solder that might work to sweat on a front sight or ramp......and the small limbsaver slip on recoil pad works real good on the pallet wood buttstock. I have three rifles set up so i can move the limbsaver to whichever gun i am shooting,only takes a second to switch the pad and it's an inexpensive way to shoot a quality recoil pad on several guns...you don't need to buy one for each gun

You might try the Truglo Shotgun Glo-Dot II snap on sight. Without a bead you would have to use some kind of adhesive to keep it in line.

. I need to look around some local shops and see if they have any odd and end sights i can look through .i took a pair of slightly better pictures .

Matt a short 12ga project is a fun and easy one, yours is looking good.
I did one not too long ago and had a lot of fun with it. I plan on another, but plan on cutting the buttstock down a bit and putting a thick recoil pad to make up the loss of LOP. I have tried a few different ways to attach a scope mount without drilled and tapped a 12ga barrel but I didn't have much luck, though I know a few here have with different ways.
I suppose if it came down to it, someone could spot weld a Steel base to the barrel, though I have never done it....

Looks good.
I have one similar to that. 19 1/4 barrel. Used it for quail in Kansas outside Ft Riley. DNR laid the hands down it so many times, I finally painted it to keep it from rusting(sweaty hands) Now I get it out when the kids and I shoot clay pigeons out back. Throw a real nice pattern for clays close

I had one cut to 18 1/2" and loved it. I never got around to hunting with it or putting sights on it, but I could shoot 3-4" groups with cheap slugs at 50 yards and busted a few self thrown clays with no problem. I guess that's why I never put a bead or sights on it.The forearm stud broke off and I trade it off for a stub project. I think I may try to same thing with a 20ga next.

18" (most take them to 18 1/2" to be safe); 26" overall length.

Black max is just rubberized super glue, Gorilla brand super glue is rubberized also, give it a try, it's awesome stuff! Rough up both surfaces with sandpaper first, wipe them down with acetone/alcohol, let dry a minute and you're ready to glue! Let it sit a day before shooting it.

So I saw this same gun (12ga 3") at a local pawnshop today in good shape for $75....So is that a good deal? It locked up good, smooth bore and wasn't cut (yet)...

Could I send it in for a rifled slug barrel? ULSH? Tracker II?

not sure what do you mean about the stocks ? they are factory except the sling studs . i might be goiing otu squirrel hunting later today and will likely bring the .410 along , but may bring the 12 gauge barrel too so i can shoot it a few times .

I did a similar project. 19 inch barrel,sent barrel to Colonial Arms and had it threaded for tubes. Had a similar bad experiance with sights.
bought a vented heat shield with ghost ring sights.Had to modify the forearm for fit. Looks and works great. I also have a 28 guage reducer that I use for tree rats. The barrel has a 3.5 inch chamber,and tremendous recoil. Got a rifled slug tube works great.

Hold on tight if you decide to run some slugs or buckshot through it.

I got one just like it and trust me... you'll know you pulled the trigger on something.

LOOKS GREAT!!! I LOVE these "chopped" hands!!!

I have a couple 12's a 20 and a 16ga!!! All shoot slugs minute of whitetail out to about 75yards. That's about as far as I would really want to shot one with it anyhow. The first pic is the first one I made and its got a peep and a contender front site. Shoots really well. I one shot two boars between the eyes as they charged us!!

This next one is a real old timer!!! Its also a take down!! One of my favorites for a "camp" gun as it fits in my pack and goes quite unnoticed until its needed!! its been with me many times no one who wasn't in my tent even knew I had it.

This last one is my 16Ga. Its got a peep from a T/C something or other. Shoots brenikes very well. I haven't shot anything sans paper with it so far.

Here is a Savage 220!!

thanks for sharing the pics. the take down 12 looks very packable . also liking the 16 gauge , i really like them and I need to get one of my own .

i did get out squirrel hunting yesterday saw a few but none were within range of the .410 . still a lot of leafs out too so next time i think i may take my Stevens 94m 20 gauge .

To answer your question, it depends on what frame you have as to weather or not the factory will fit another barrel to it or not.

Yes.
But in a 20ga USH. the 12 is based on a 10 ga frame from what I have read. but check the FAQ's in this or send Tim (Quicktodo) an e-mail (Sorry tim but you know it all about these.
Two things about cutting down the gun.
1) before you do put some tape where you want to cut and see what it looks like.
Friend cut a SXS down to 18" and it looks kind of goofy. 20 - 22" looks good.
2) as you cut from 28 / 30 to 18-21" it will raise your point of impact. adding rifle sights helps to bring it back.

Thanks for the reply, I think I will pick up. I'd like to cut it down and use it as a truck/pack gun with rifle sights on it and for my kid where I could load it down to manage recoil on the slugs. Not sure if I'd cut it all the way down. If I git another barrel, it would be the lighter weight rifled 12 ga version as I wouldn't want that anvil of the USH anyway.

That is correct, the 12Ga USH's use a 10 Ga barrel and receiver and a std 12Ga gun for the 20Ga version. This gets them the heavier barrels.

My first H&R from many, many years ago, a 16 gauge. Forgot I had it, cleaned it up and cut it down. Made me a great truck gun.
