Gun safes
« on: October 10, 2003, 03:02:34 PM »
Sorry if this is off topic, but I could not find a forum that fit.  I need to buy a new gun safe, but it is nearly impossible to find a genuine gun safe that is not a fire safe.  I bought a "fire safe" some twenty years ago, and it came with the warning that it should be left open a few hours a week to air out.  The reason was that the fire retardant worked by releasing moisture, and that even in normal situations some  moisture is continually released in small amounts.  I have noticed that some of the metal parts in the safe show some rust, and I do not want to buy a safe that could cause some of my guns to get rust.  Anybody have first hand experience?  BTW I will not have an electric outlet by where the safe will be, so I can't get a dehumidifier rod.

thanks

Pat

i too considered a safe at the urging of my wife.  but i was advised by a friend that is involved with the fire dept. that they are rated for 1000 degrees for an hour (aproximately).   problem is that a house fire burns at average 1500 for well over that (according to my friend).  a small fire and you might fair o.k., but full blown-your screwed.  i decided to carry good insurance and built a false wall safe for my guns.  bear in mind i am no carpenter.   but it works for my needs and only cost me two 2x4's and some time.

I liked the non-fire rated models, but I'm probably going to buy the fire rated model as soon as I confirm I can get a dehumid rod into it.

Good luck.

Check out Homeland Safes in California.  Their safes have 2300 degree fire protection, great features, lots of options, and good prices.  The customer service is pretty darn good too.  I pick mine up next Friday at their plant.[/url]
