8mm Succcess, Youth Hunt
« on: October 11, 2009, 03:06:22 PM »
My 13 year old nephew bagged his first deer today. The early youth hunt gives the young ones a week end hunt for buck or antlerless deer. He used his Grandfathers 98K Mauser and some hand loads of mine, 185 grain Core lokts over some RL15. The deer was quartering towards him at 75 yards. One shot through the chest and much of the rib cage, drt.

That had to be pretty darn exciting.  Congrats to you and your nephew.

What part of Wisconsin were you hunting?

Cheese, I forgot to mention on the above post, that you're a pretty awesome Uncle for taking your nephew out to hunt. Well, I'm saying it now. ;)

His father was there too, we were making drives towards him with no guns since it was the youth hunt. We all cut the deer up tonight and the boy was very interested in learning and helping. I recovered the bullet in the ham after entering through the chest, a perfect mushroom. The bullet weight was 149 grains after starting out at 185 grains. That is over 80% weight retention. Not bad for a cheap Corelokt. Pics of the bullet later.

Way Cool!! Oh to be 13 again!! I turn 60 in less than an hour and still have the bullet from my first deer and my first elk. I "discovered" the lowly 185gr corelokt a few years ago and my 8x57 delivered one to my first North Idaho Whitetail. YUP!! Them bullets will put them down - already!

Great job, Uncle and ataboys to Dad, also!!

Tell your nephew congradulation and thank you for helping him on the sport of hunting. I remember my sons first deer. I was way proud.
Do you speak German? Well I don't speak Spanish so maybe you'd better learn English.
