Need help making up my mind
« on: October 12, 2009, 03:56:37 AM »
Owned a T/C Hawkens years ago and sold it, now I want to buy another muzzleloader and want to go with an inline. Have been looking at the Omega's, but have not pulled the trigger on one yet. A buddy said to go with a smokeless muzzleloader, Remington or Savage. How about this CVA Accura? I want to mount a scope on it. What do you guys say? I know it's a Chevy - Ford thing, but if there are any muzzleloaders out there to stay away from that would be good information to have too. Working men can't be buying muzzleloaders every other week trying to find a good one. Thank you very much in advance.   RRM

cva accura- you cant do no better. They are sweet rifles.

They all have the sweetest trigger ever to be put on a factory ML. Opening and closing is also simple. Just pull back on the trigger guard and the barrel pops open.

Remington does not make a smokeless muzzleloader, only Savage. First I would check where you intend to hunt as some states have restrictions on what is legal. Once that is decided, I would check if I wanted to shoot full bore conical bullets as most T/C rifles will not shoot them with any confidence. That includes the Omega which I have and it will not. My recommendation based on a lot of my own experience and several others is check out the CVA Accura. It has the new Bergara barrel which is a new barrel for CVA and of extremely high quality based on all reports. My Optima Elite from CVA which is one of the switch barrel rifles from CVA (the Apex is their newest switch barrel and another possiblity but more expensive) has the Bergara barrel and it is great. Unless my state or the ones I wanted to hunt allowed smokeless (which Arizona does not) I would stay away from the Savage as it is heavy and picky about loads (being smokeless the margin for error is a lot less). Knight made a lot of great rifles but they are out of business at this time. I was less than impressed with the Spanish imports from Traditions and CVA several years ago but CVA has definately stepped up to the plate and makes some high quality stuff now. Traditions still is not a favorite of mine. I had a Pursuit LT which I traded and never missed it after the trade. I'm sure you will get other opinions and of course they are just that, opinions.

I would go smokeless with the Savage and never look back.

If I were not going smokeless I would go with a T/C product of your choice.  Of the muzzleloaders I have shot I have always thought they were a little better gun than most of the others, just my opinion of course.

What state do you live in that allows smokeless??  Not sure but most of the Western states usually do not allow it.

I live in Ohio and smokeless is legal. My brother has a Sidekick and likes it, but they don't make them any longer I understand. Would not mind spending a couple of bucks more for something that will last me the rest of my life. I know T/C makes good stuff and I have never been a guy to buy foreign stuff, but the times they are a changin. CVA Accura has gotten a lot of favorable reports, so I don't know what to buy. The one thing I don't want to do is buy something and not necessarily not like it, but have it not be reliable and end up spending more money on another one. Don't mean to sound cheap, but two kids in college will rock your wallet. Thanks again.    RRM

You can probably pick up a nice used Knight Wolverine.  They shoot great out to 100 yards.

Those accura's sure are a pretty gun. All reports have been favorable. I have no first hand experience with them so I can't give much help with them. I do own an omega and it's a great gun. You can't go wrong with them. One of the big box stores has them on sale for 299. Good luck and remember, you get what you pay for, regardless of brand.

I understand about the two kids in college since I am in that boat also.  My gun buying has dropped to zero, lucky to even have enough to buy reloading supplies if I can find them.  Hang in there, we will be buying guns again in the future.

I live in Indiana and smokeless is legal.

My vote goes to the Accura, in fact I would specify the ss/black spiderweb stock.

Excellent trigger, easy to clean, and most have been reported to be very accurate.

Hey, this "two kids in college" boat is getting pretty crowded! ;D  :'(

Before the Accura and now the Apex, I never gave the CVA's a second look. I don't care for the stock on the Accura, but it is a quality rifle taking into consideration the competition. Now the Apex on the other hand, has a very nice feel to it an is pleasing to the eye. I went over two of them a week ago, they are as good of a production inline muzzleloading rifle that is being made today. I don't like the Encore stock either, but I compared an Encore, Knight KP1, and the Apex. Never thought I would chose a CVA over a Knight or T/C, but the Apex is the better rifle IMO.

I don't own a CVA yet, but if I were to have a pick of any production rifle right now today, it would have to be the Apex. If you like the stock on the Accura, and don't want switch barrel capability, it is the more economical choice.

If you can go smokeless, the Savage is always a good choice. We can't shoot smokeless in Michigan during the Muzzleloader deer season, and you can only use them in the Rifle Zone during the Firearms deer season.
