Howdy Chaz!   :D

After doing some loading for the 45 2.4", I'm willing to bet that you've already figured out that full case and heavy bullet are the most effecient combinations.  Most folks seem to use 35 grains of powder, mine run a bit more just because that's what my homemade dipper throws.  It is my belief that with a 250/255 grain bullet and at least 35 grains of FF or FFF, the load is clean burning enough that you can shoot all day without having to do anything between cylinders except reload.  I do use a beer carton wad between bullet and powder.  It has been my experienct that the cartridges with the wad shoot cleaner than those without.  I have no logical explaination, it just is.  I use single groove bullets pan lubed with toliet ring/ crisco.  I have some bullets from the Lee two groove mould, and just looking, the two grooves would hold less lube than the singles.

As a side note, I believe that a piece of 44 mag brass holds right at 35 grains of BP.

Butler, just how wuz you sayin you came by them beer carton wads?  Kidding aside, how do you cut them?  I've heard of using a .45 case but it doesn't seem like that would last very long.  What about the soft wax gas checks?  I haven't been able to find a source for them, but I would like to try some with my smokeless loads.   Thanks   44 Man

44Man, I know nothing about gaschecks, and have never even heard of the soft ones, so sorry, I can't help there.  I have a 45 cal. wad punch, it cuts .458" diameter, but they still work well.  As to the beer cartons, would you believe that I pick up the ones tossed out by passers-by???

Gentlemen

Buffalo Arms has wad punches for both .45 pistol and .45 Rifle.  Butler, sounds like you have the one for the Rifle.  They have both the hammer struck ones and the press mounted one.  There's no close fractional equivelant, like there is for the .36.

Soft gas checks are simply thin wax wads, cut from bee keepers comb bases.  These can be bought from bee keeper suppliers.  I've never gone there, finding that the card and poly wads do well enough in my 40-70BN.  I really don't need to add another variable.

When I get my MAV mold for my 44-40 and start shooting that with the black, I plan to start with no wad and maybe go to a card wad if needed.  I don't think wads were used in the original at all.

Shrink, you're correct about the wad cutter, I got it for rifle, but being a tightwad, I found that 'tightwads" work just fine.

Butler

Unfortunately, I started with the pistol one, for my C&B pistols.  I cut wads out of hardware store felt door and window seal soaked in bullet lube.  Seems to work fine, but they are more sticky than the dry lubed ones!

I didn't want to go with a too small wad for a friend's original Trapdoor so I got the Rifle punch as well.  One of these days I'll get a barrel on an action and a stock made and have a 45-70 myself!

I have used wax gas checks, or soft gas ckecks, for years in my 45-70 and they do work. Here's a link to one vendor: http://www.cliffsgunsmithing.com/Cat_SGC.htm

Howdy Chaz,

Way back on the back pages here there are some old posts that will help you out.

Here's a link to a "quick & dirty"  .45 BP loading thread: http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=2789

I use a punch I got for the princely sum of 5 whole dollars at the local Wal-Mart in the craft department if memory serves, it is billed as a 1/2" but the disk fits perfectly in a 45 case I have used T-Shirt/Beer Carton, and currently am using up an old stock of Business cards.......

chaz-
another thing you may want to try is Folgers coffee lids - LPDE plastic wads. I use them with Swiss powder and they're part of the most accurate loads I have - in all my guns. In essence, just load it like you would your 45-90 - appropriate compression, heavy boolit, etc. And make smoke !!!

After some suggestions from another list, I'm trying a .5cc dipper of grits over 30gr of 3f.  I use a fibre wad in my 45-90.

I have a punch from Buffalo Arms, most excellent.
I also found a Craft Punch for 5 bucks at one of those " Husband Hell" craft stores ( you guys know what I mean ) .
