45/410 restore....
« on: October 12, 2009, 09:43:45 AM »
just aquired this barrel last week and have been deal'n with the problems of accuracy.
first off the scope rail taps must have been done by a 3 year old...
the previous owner warned me of that... and its taken care of now.

the choke tube replacement was a pain too!!!
you can read more about that in the ilion satisfaction thread...
anyway i got one coming..

borrowed a set of dies from my son, until mine comes in..
found some brass and bullets i had since ???? who knows...
all i can guess is its for my ruger that i have had since 1979.
and the dies must have been stolen years ago...
anyway....

shot her this morning with 250gr cast i made, again...when..???
but it had a hope for fiddle'n wif...

i had to forget about the bead sight, cus its just there for the looks... i guess

after redrill and tap i mounted a short base and installed a cheap redot on her..
bore sited my way, unlike most do...

and she started to come alive!!!!  25 yards about 6" from my poa

moved to 50yrds 9" from poa, ok... i can deal with that..

dial'n the dot in until i got'r close ta center..

she's not a 1-holer but purdy close, maybe 2" or less.  and thats as good as i need anyway
for 50yrd shots from a moving tractor :o

here she is ... the john deere shoot'n iron!!!!!!!!!!

i thank i'm gonna like it !!!  and tha critters gonna hate it....
specially dem rattleback cotton mouths..... :o

i'm thank'n bout painter JD green and uh yeller!!!

sea-ya.....
in tha meen time, i'm wait'n for tha  7th trumpet ta sound !!!

gotta big green tractor ana diesel truck, my idea of heaven's chasin whitetail bucks and asa country boy, you know i can survive............

hey boy, hit this mason jar one time...

Hey Jonh!...late to the party again.  Glad to hear you got it shooting so fast!  2" at 50 yds is excellent for that barrel...  Pm me your load if ya dont mind.  Give me all the details.  I had to go LONG brass to get mine to group.  Looking forward to it.

I know all about rattlesmakes, tractors and tractor guns.  I banded hawks for 5 or 6 years on a mountain top near the Delaware Water Gap in NJ named Rattlesnake Mountain......not because there were none there ::)  I fished the Wanaque River between Greenwood Lake and the Wanaque Reservoir, and when the morning sun hit the rocky west bank, it was alive with rattlers.  Then I moved to Florida....nuf said.  Finally, I got smart and moved to Da U.P. of Michigan.....no nasty snakes.  It's nice not to have to look behind every rock and log for them.

A relative owned a dairy farm in upstate NY, and we hunted deer there.  As a thank you, about 40 years ago, we gave him a .22 magnum for Christmas.  It became his tractor gun and has accounted for literally hundreds of deer, chucks and other varmints over the years.  He since moved to Wisconsin.

I'm on my own 120 acre farm here, and my truck/tractor gun is being built.  It's a Handi .357 max, cut to 16.5 inches, with a red dot and a youth stock.  I think I'm gonna love it.

Hey Doc, try those Winchester buckshot rounds from your 45/410.  The three piece 000 buck prints nicely from my 45/410 Survivor.  I can keep them fairly tight on a paper plate at 25 yds. but I don't know about further out.

Since I had a front sight put on mine (you are right the bead is just for looks) and added an XS ghost ring backup sight to the scope rail I'm pretty happy with it.

It's the bottom one in this photo:

A closer view of the XS sight...

Kind of a fuzzy view of the sight picture...

I think you'll love it. I carry my BFR in 45c/410 on my tractor and ATV.

The shot comes in real handi and you can carry a couple of buckshot loads for anything bigger.

JJMagnum,

What front site is that and where can I get one?
My 45/410 is still on backorder but I want to put sites on it when I get it. ;)
Also do you have the part number for the rear site?

I can't say about the front sight, my gunsmith picked it out to be high enough to go with the rear sight on the rail.  The rear sight can be found at:
