rerifle an inline
« on: October 12, 2009, 12:18:59 PM »
Would it be possible to find a used 45 caliber inline rifle and have it rerifled to 50 caliber roundball size?
I don't know if the breechplug threads would be a problem.

I've thought of that myself.I dont recall seeing caliber markings on plugs from rifles offered in 45 and 50 so they may in fact be interchangeable.I would measure the outer face of the plug and if it is larger than the groove diameter of the finished barrel I'd say it would most likely do fine.I've often thought that a very fine rifle could be made for ball and have the benifits that come with the inline concept.Imagine an octagonal barrel with say, Knight or T/C Black Diamond action/trigger parts.Could even make it a fixed breechplug type ( Thunderhawk type).it could be VERY distinctive and effective in .50,.54 or even .58.Fiddleback maple stock, browned barrel, crescent buttplate and brass fittings....Humm.....

I don't know why it wouldn't be possible.  But heck, why bother?  A sidelock round ball rifle is so much more pleasing than an in-line (in my eyes at least).  What are you looking to gain by going to an in-line configuration?

Anyway, if I were going to pursue something like that I would google muzzle loader barrel makers and give some of them a call to see if one will do it and what the cost would be.

I've seen several barrel maker names thrown around on different forums. One I've seen mentioned several times as a maker who rebores shot out barrels is Robert Hoyt in Fairfield PA  (717 642-6696).
